Backfires after 5000 revs

  black 172
My car wouldn’t start earlier today but once I got it going I took it out. Once the engine was warmed up I thought I’d give it a bit of stick to clear it out but once over 5k revs it backfires any one experienced this before?

Make sure you do a good 10-15 min run, they limiter is not removed untill oil is upto temp, not water.. but saying that limiter is around 6k not 5 so may need to be plugged into the computer to see whats wrong

The lad who owned my Trophy before me said it something similar happened to him, he took it to reno and they replaced the cat and also uploaded a more recent version of the map for the car.

This used to happen in my old FF182, if i floored it in 1st or 2nd then let off the power just as the 5000rpm kick came it used to pop 2 or 3 times.

Actuall reading this back i think they were both more of a pop rather than a backfire.

Not filled up at any shite petrol stations lately? friend of mines had a really weird backfire/missfire in parts of the rev range.. replaced loads of bits.. still didnt fix it.. 300 miles later filled it up & walla, all fixed

Could be a number of things.. but start by trying the things that dont break the bank.. would look into spark plugs / HT leads / coil pack next.. or get down to any reno specialist & hook up your car to the computer & see what fault codes it comes up with

Sound like exactly what our track car was suffering from this week.

We noticed a back fire at 3k, then the car would not start, then the car starts still a back fire. You get the picture.

Turns out to be the TDC sensor. On the top of the gear box.

We changed the leads and plugs aswell, But ended up costing alot more.

The sensor is 25quid then some more of the loom, this sensor is really easy to get to (if your battery is in the boot of your car :D)

I replaced the TDC sensor about a month ago.

My car is still doing this ive changed the spark plug and leads. it seems like its hitting the limiter and wont go over 4000-5000 revs rather than a back fire like i first thought. also its only when the engine is warm when its cold its goes great

any one got any ideas lamba? cat? would any of those make it like this

Is it more of a hesitation when you are driving hard say above 5k rpm? Engine sort of holds back and then lets go?

If so replacing the knock sensor im mine fixed this.

bttt

i was told it could be the coolant temp sensor so i changed that today and it's still no better, also been told it could be the cam sensor has anyone had trouble with a cam sensor?

dephaser (spelling) possibly? had a shot of a mates 172 who said it didnt feel that fast, and it was dead high in the revs, turned out the VVT wasnt activating
