Battlefield 2 - VoIP question

What's people's view on it? Do people use it?

I don't - as I'm only on 512k broadband, but from what I've seen, you suffer a massive disadvantage from a well organised group using it. It literally is like a switch - VoIP servers are much harder, those without are much easier.

I had a game yesterday on a VoIP-enabled French server. The players in there (I forget the clan name - something with 'D' at the start!) were very, very good - far better than me anyway. However, there were times where no-one could have seen where I respawned. I literally respawned and hid immediately. Yet a few seconds later, a tank would roll into the courtyard, immediately aim to my prone position and fire.

I did think that their UAV was above my position, but it wasn't. I simply couldn't understand how they knew where I was without a other team members spotting me and saying where I was over VoIP.

I must admit, if I had higher bandwidth, I'd probably give it a go, but it does seem to give a significant advantage to the team using it. Also, it makes the servers quiet - hardly any text chat which is boring! BOO! ;)

Haven't played that in months, I've even forgotten the keys lol

I just used to meet my workmate on there and we would go round together with the VoIP and shoot some baddies!! :)

As for your broadband, I didn't even know your could still get 512kb most companies have upgraded everyone to 2mb, mine has been and the price went down too :D
I'd give your ISP a ring and see why you haven't been upgraded yet...

LOL Mitch - we're actually entitled to 8MB broadband, but the phone lines in and around here were fitted circa 1897 - so until BT do something, we're kinda stuck! :) Our next-door neighbour can't even get broadband at all - so we really must be at the fringes of distance from the exchange.

Bit of a pisser in all honesty as my brother-in-law lives about half-a-mile down the lane, towards the main road and easily gets 2MB broadband....

I use it but not the in built bf2 one, i log onto a teamspeak server with some mates it makes the game more fun just chatting and laughing about the game.
Dont forget the commander mode, he is able to zoom in and spot people & if the commander is using voip then that makes alot of difference.

Good point m8 - I'd forgotten about that. If you haven't got VoIP though, I much prefer joining servers without it. Seems far more balanced - and fair! ;)

Just started using that unlocked medic weapon (G36E?) - superb, very accurate. That unlocked support weapon is quite good too.

The VOIP in Battlefield 2 is a bandwidth hogger and will drastically affect your performance, ping and lag.

get either Ventrilo or teamspeak, both are free to an extent.
