beep when changing gear in my 197

does anyone know what i have switched off to stop my car beeping when i need to change up, today when i went for a blast i noticed it had stopped, thanks ian:race:
 
I didn't think the beep was on the 197. It isn't on mine. Just a light on the rev counter.

The beep was on the 200's I think.
 
Your power curve starts to drop before that light flashes, so slip back a few hundred RPM!
 

I've always wondered this.

Possibly if you change at peak power, you'll be lower down the power curve in the next gear, whereas change after peak and the power will dip a little but you'll be higher up the power curve in the next gear?

I don't know. Could make little to no difference. A better, quicker gear change than someone changing at the optimum point will probably be more rewarding though.
 
You'd only ever need to stay in gear above peak power if about to enter a corner for example and it's too little time to go up a gear.
 
But past peak your losing power, change earlier at peak power, your then gaining power, and more than likely have more torque which is what's used for acceleration!
 
Optimum gear change point is always after peak power, I cant think of a single exception to that other than where cars make peak power on the limiter so you have no choice.

The reason is that the next gear will offer a mecanical disadvantage, so you need to be past peak power before its going to be quicker in the next gear to carry on accelerating by the time you take the gearing into account.

Just put your torque curve into excel and multiple it by each gear, you'll soon see the optimum change point from each ratio to the next, and it wont be the same typically in every gear.

I've been modifying cars and bikes for 20 or so years now, so its hard not to pick a few things up along the way. I write quite a lot of technical articles for various car magazines at the moment as I quite enjoy sharing what I have learned over the years, so forums are just an extension of that really (all be it an unpaid one, lol)
 
PS

One other thing to mention is that wherever your theoritical lines cross, you should change up slightly higher than that, to allow for deceleration due to wind resistance during the change (were only talking 50rpm or so here, unless you take 5 seconds to change gear, lol)

So for longer than i have been alive then!
 
the only problem will be , as far as I remember, if you change below the 7000 rpm , the car will fall bellow 5000 rpm on the gear change , and as far as I feel the car , the car doesn`t pull that hard from bellow 5000 .So you need to change at least at @7000 rpm so you fall above 5000 rpm on the next gear .
