Belt Squeaking 172 Cup

  Fiesta ST-3
My cup has had a brand new cam belt and tensioners etc a few k ago including water pump. Not sure on auxiliary belt but some where there is a squeaking noise. Not a squeal but similar sort of noise.

What are the likely causes? I'm getting concerned now, if the car is on idle she does it, if I dab the throttle it gets quicker/slightly louder.

How would you tell mate, how much tension should be in it? I first thought when I was driving it was the wind blowing through a gap but its deffinatly coming from the bay, even when I'm driving at 60 etc.

That's the sound I had on mine. Sounding like wind was blowing in somewhere. I had my cam AND aux belt changed and I haven't heard the noise since.

cup aux belt can loosen up sometimes if the alternator isn't bolted up tight enough. They also need doing a bit tighter than you'd think in my experience.

Apologies for the thread Hi-Jack!

Mine sometimes squeals for a split second on cold start up, could the alternator belt be suspect? It's a belt for sure.

Cheers Danny. I spoke to the dude I bought the car off last night and he doesn't think the aux belt has been done, and non of the receipts I have show it. So I will be booking it in this week to have a gander.

Right took it to the garage (a family friend)

When we got there, there was no sound of squeaking. He reved the car etc and nothing. But he had a look and tightened the belt anyways and off I drove no noise.

Now the car has been parked up for a few hours, start her up and its back. Not so bad, but when I push the clutch in its back to squeaking as normal and not as bad when I take it off but deffinatly there.

What the f**k do I do now lol. I just want it Squeak free.

Squeak might be clutch related from what you are saying. Does the noise dissapear if you push the clutch in?

If its clutch related then its probably just the release bearing getting old.

  Fiesta ST-3
The squeaking deffinatly sounds like its coming from the belt though? It just gets louder once the clutch is in.

Let me perhaps explain the situation a little better sorry guys.

On start up there is a squeaking noise a bit like a dodgy wheel on a go kart we all used to have. If I dab the accelerator it gets quicker and louder, if I push the clutch in it gets quicker ad louder. Took the car to the garage today and he tightened the belt bit sods law it wasn't making the noise at his. And didn't make the noise once I drove off. But after the car being parked up in the cold for an hour or two the noise is back.

It will be your Aux belt squealing, especially when cold, there will be some slack in it or glazing on the rubber. Just change it mate.

Right more of an investigation it sounds as if the noise is coming from under the Air box. Here is a video I took.

Most likely just some moisture on the belt run Scott... new belt tensioned will cure it. If not it could be the alternator bearing race but i wouldnt worry about that yet.

I know it's not the same car but Dad's wee dci Clio was doing this a while-back.
Got 10x worse after coming home from holiday with the car at the airport for a week - was like driving a cage full of budgies!

Took it to our mechanic and he discovered there was a bearing gone in the alternator - new alternator fitted and the budgies have stopped :)

Might not be your answer but it's something to eliminate :)

Cheers Mick :) Had the belt tightened to no joy so bought another just incase. Shall take it to another garage to fit the belt and check the alt.

Clutch bearing then. Get it done before it collapses

(But get a 2nd opinion first)

If it's coming from under the airbox it has to be clutch related.

If it's coming from the belt area then to stop it you will have to replace the aux belt.

None of us can diagnose it properly though really without being there.

Well it's going to the garage Thursday. Took it for a diagnostics just now and he said it sounds like a bearing but couldn't tell me where. He seemed to think the alt could have a slip clutch or something?

They couldn't tell you if it was the alternator bearing or not? Sweet baby Jesus and the orphans, do people not like doing work at the mo?

1 - Remove aux belt, start car briefly... has noise gone? YES/NO

YES - Go to step 2, NO - Further investigation required to trace source of complaint.

2 - Feel for "Play" or listen for audible signs of failure in all components and accesories on the belt run when spun by hand... were any faults found? YES/NO

YES - Replace component, NO - Fit new belt and re-tighten.
