Belts snapping 1*2

Keep reading more and more threads where belts have snapped on the 172/182 models which kind of concerns me.
What are the main causes of this? Neglecting servicing, thrashing the crap outa the cars, or shoddy mechanics not knowing what they're doing?
Just interested to know really. My car hardly gets used and is sitting on 19k miles but I still got the belts changed at 5 years by a recommended specialist.
For those of you whose belts have snapped, did the car display any unusual symptoms prior to this happening?

Most of the time it's the auxiliary belt that causes cam belt failure.

Or people not doing the bottom pulley up right or not doing it when due.
