not popular on the 172/182 but k&n i firmly beleive still provide the best filtration and logevity and correctly located i.e. not where k&n say to put it and a good cold air feed (remove n/s foglamp and pipe up to it). provides gains to rival more expensive units. but either way doesnt give a loss so long as you dont put it behind the rad (which the instructions tell you to).
k&n are largely ignored recently and regarded as budget, however where i worked before we found them to be very robust and we could trust them on all applications (track & rally-where rules permitted). there are makes that claim insane power gains, but an ik is (in my opinion) to save weight, space and allow other mods -head work, cams ect. to work properly
Properly bent piping (not donkey dick ducting), nice adaptors, and a good pickup area.
The only thing i dont like about K&N is the filtration quality, its crap.....hence why they give it to you with a filter to cover the filter.
But to get the best out of it, i would be inclined to modify the underbody area to generate a high pressure location, rather than it being naturally low relative pressure behind the bumper.
