best DVD RW to get??

as per thread title!!
i want to add black DVD RW drive to my dell desktop but dont know much about the best make and spec to get - any help MUCH appreciated

I've always used Pioneers . Never had a problem with em . Most drives don't come with cables or screws though .If you do get a Pioneer 110D make sure you get yourself an 80 wire 40 pin ide cable . Looks like a normal ide cable , fits the socket on your motherboard just the same as 40 wire 40 pin ide cable would . Its something to do with faster transfer of information .

plexter would be my first choice then pioneer. the pioneers are great drives dont get me wrong i actually own one from ages back

a ide drive basically connect the molex for power , connect the ide cable

and set the dirve to master / slave / cable select depending if theres another drive on same cable

Open up your pc ( make sure the powers off ) . If you already have 2 drives in your pc disconnect the drive you want to take out white power plug with 4 pins inside , this is the molex connector , then pull out the ide cable from the back of the drive . If you only have 1 drive in your pc then follow the long flat cable ( ide cable ) to the existing drive , on that cable will be a spare 40 pin plug ( usually black , but can sometimes be another colour ) , there is one on the end plugged into your motherboard , one in the middle of the cable and one on the other end . Check what the exsiting drives jumpers are set to . These are on the back of the drive and are just a small 2 pin black plug , this can be pulled out with tweezers or your fingernails .If you look on the the back of the drive , from right to left it will be 4 pins , thats your molex ( power ) then 40 pins , thats your ide and then next to that are the pins for your jumper. If your main drive is set to " Master " , set your new drives jumpers to " Slave " .Plug in the molex power plug , then the ide , make sure you plug the ide cable in the rightway round , theres usually a small groove in male part of the ide connection , and on the cable there should be a small piece of plastic on the ide connector that corresponds with the groove in the plug on the back of the drive , if not there will be a pink line on one side of the ide cable , keep the pink line to the right hand side when you plug it into your drive .
I've probably just confused the b*llocks off ya now ,lol .If you get stuck and need anymore info post it in here .

Sony haven't made their own drives for some time now.

They're either rebadged LiteOn's or rebadged BenQ's.

You're better off buying the real thing if you want either of those!

You can't go far wrong with the NEC's 4550/4551 (4551 supports Labelflash) or the Pioneer 110/110D (D is without DVDRAM support).

Incase you want to get into all the disc quality scanning malarkey (CD-Speed / DVDInfoPro), BenQ wins hands down!

All of them are available for £40 tops.
