Best Free Photo Editor?

Until now I've always uploaded photos to Flickr and used their editing software 'Picnik' to enhance the photo quickly and easily. However, picnik is no longer available so I need a replacement.

I've heard Photoshop mentioned dozens of times but all I essentially need is a quick, easy and free way to make pictures look cool, with vignetting and colour boosting etc.

Any recommendations?

Gimp and paint.net get my vote. Rawtherapee is a great raw converter/ editor too.
