Have long have you had yours, any major problems? I brought mine (1995 M reg) a couple of weeks ago for £1950.00. However it needs a bit of work doing on the body. Engine seems fine though!! Is there anything else you recommend I do other than service before she is let out on the road.

Got any pics?Mines had no engine related problems, engine runs superbly, goes well and sounds perfect.
Check your if cambelt has been done, if not change it as a matter of urgency.. you can get a complete Renault kit fitted with replacement pulleys for £250-350 but its important its done, or the bill later on could be much harsher.
Might want to give it a coolant flush and general overhaul, plugs, filters etc - could stretch to leads, distributor cap/rotor arm and so on - guess it depends on how much history you have to check for recent replacements.
The most money so far has had to be spent on renewing old suspension parts that were contributing to the slightly soggy feel of the car. It may benefit from new shocks all round, bushes, a quick weld to the steering column to tighten it up if it needs it..

10w/40 semi synth is the only oil i would ever use in mine
fully synth such as mobil 1 is way too thin
fully synth is only too thin if the grade is thin, not all synthetics are thin its totally dependant on the grade of the oil.........
Mobil 1 Motorsport is a popular choice which is fully synthetic and 15W-50, i.e not thin......
Elf Competition ST 15W-50 is also approved by BenR so it must be good !.........
id be tempted to run it on Silkolene Pro S 10W-50 if i had a Williams, which you can buy from http://www.a-pp.comwww.a-pp.com or any Silkolene stockist, there aint that many but its top quality oil and usefully comes in 5L bottles
One of my Williams is on 127k miles now and i run it on GTX magnetec fully synthetic 15w40. I find this removes the tractor like sounds on cold start up. I have been told a thicker oil will be better for a higher milage car. In my other Williams (18k miles), i use magnatex 10w40 fully synthetic as it doesnt sound so tractor like on start up.
I have another question though. Are there any oils that will reduce the build up of heat that occurs in valvers and Williams. Ie do some oils keep the engine cooler than others, be it brand, grade or type?
Only ever use Millers motorsports oils in mine , but it depends what your intended use for the car is ? If its just going to be used on the road then a good semi-synth will be ok . As mine is used for track and competition use I only ever use Millers CFS 10w/60 competion oil .
It needs to be changed a little more frequently , but really protects at extreme temperatures .
Different oils have different thermal properties. Some oils dont take heat away from components as well, some dont release it very well. Some oils run cooler than others. Along with these temp changes are viscosity changes which affects oil pressure.
SO choose your oil ideally by the ambient temp your in and the average oil temp.
Thicker oils do not need to be used on older engines.....and 127k isnt old.
Synthetic has better properties, its main benefit is far superior wear protection, better heat and viscoty index, no VI improvers, no polymers, no sludge build up and longer drain intervals.
And all this bullsh*t about magnatec, clinging to cylinder walls etc etc.....ALL ester based oils will cling to metal due to the polaric nature of the base stock, Castrol is just making a big deal out of it.

BenR, I dont use magnatec for any other reason than i got a good deal when i bought 10 containers of it off a friend. I dont beleive it sticks to anything except my clothes. I have no real brand allegence, as i change the oil every 2-3k anyway. I was told to use a 15W40 oil in my engine so thats what ive been doing and with this oil i get not tractor like clunks or bang on cold start up. However, now summer is upon us what oil should i use to aid in keeping the engine oil cooler in the hot temps? Is it possible? Will it be any benefit?

So do you guys reckon the deal at National is a good one? Duckhams QXR, what grade of oil do you get with that, and more importantly are they to be trusted with the Williams?
Yeah always had mine done at National and even though they are arsey still go there. They fill it up to full on dipstick and do a good job. Just hardly have teh filter in stock. Because once they kept on getting the wrong filter I got one from GSF. Everytime since they say theyll do it if I provide the filter. No way as the price includes filter, unless they knock the cost off.
Other than that they are OK and for 15 quid the oil is worth 20 at least, plus cost of filter and hassle to do it yourself, well worth it.
