Best power mods for a mk2 1.4 sport

  Mk2 clio sport
Im after the solution to a small problem. I now have my new(ish) mk2 phase 1 clio 1.4 sport and i want more Va Va voom lol

I am wondering what are the best mods to get more power out of the engine. I have already put a k&n induction kit on, while i look into a viable way of attatching a piperX viper. So what else can i do to it to get decent power gains, i am looking to break the 100hp barrier and possibly the 120hp but i think that is whishful thinking

I am only 17 at the moment so i dont want to change the engine at the moment due to insurance but as far as mods go im all ears.

Cheers guys and gals

Ollie

The best things you can do are suspension and tyre work IMo the gains in performace both on track and on a back road are much more.
Personally if you do want to tune though a custom made manifold back decat and exhaust system and then a cold air intake then there the expensive bit of cams head work etc or individual throttle bodies.

Hmm i was thinking of going for a manifold and strait through exhaust but i want to avoid a decat pipe incase i get pulled for an emisions test (happens a lot by me) but if i did get viper, cams, manifold, strait through exhaust, and get it chipped. How much power am i likely to see and what sort of money will all that cost aroud £250 per mod by the looks of it

Cheers

You wont get better advice than that

Some coilovers in the for sale section cheap and then just a set of good tyres if your running 195/50/15s they are cheap as chips too........

You cannot have the 172/182 manifold mods done so i take it your on about custo mmade intake/exhaust work? If so then thats mega (relitivly) money.

You cna fail a MOT test even with just an exhaust with the CAT still in place and still pass with a decat so there no safe route.

Cams are expensive your looking at £500 ~700 then another £400 fitment plus new cambelt.
With a good engine, cams, remap (custom), Intake and exhaust plus edecat maybe 125hp noone realy cam'd a 1.4 most people just go to a 2.0 engine.

When you add up the price though even if you get 130hp its not cost effective.
Put it another way cams, head work (might as well if the cams are being done (about £700 extra) remap, intake filter etc and exhaust is about £2.5~2.7k (depends what spec bit you use etc) you'll get maybe 140hp.

A quick look in the for sale area you can pick up WIlliams/ Valver with more power for about the money you'r looking at spending on tunning which you won't ever get back at resale.

Yep, as said suspension is probably the best thing to do. Might not make you car actually faster but it kinda does, cos you can go round corners a lot faster, about 20+ extra than normal.

as for getting to 100bhp lol!! good luck you starting with 75bhp, which aint a bad engine but the only way I can see of actually making it fast is to turbo it, which I'm not sure has even been done or who would be willing to do it, or if you could even afford to throw a few thousand at it.

Ok so its not going to be cheap

although it seems to be recomended to get the suspension and tyres done id rather get a few more horses out of it then do the sus later on.

Why is it so expensive for cams. I was looking a kent and piper cams and they are only about £250 for 1 cam and why so much to get it fitted is it not a case of

rocker cover off
old cam out
chuck new cam in
attatch new cambelt and set the timing ?

at the moment i am in full time education(college) and i am looking to do affordable ish mods for the moment till i can get a yrs no claims then change my insurer and get the head gas flowed and mabye even chuck in a 2.0l lump etc..... its just my insurance isnt a specialist so they dont like mods

As for the exhaust and manifold i can get that done at the powerflow place near me as they do full systems including decat and manifold all made to order

Cheers

£250 for cams but there not that good for making real power plus you need to get them timed in proper and might as well change the cambelt when your at it.
2.0 engine transplant is much better value but even thats not very cost effective when you see the prices of 172's.
Personalyl I'd leave it a year and pick up a cheap 172 next year you'll get way more for your money plus have the better suspension brakes etc.

Let me pass on some friendly advise.

You're 17. Full time education with a Clio 1.4.

Nothing special. It's good as a car for what you need it as, and from the sounds of it, you're not going to make 1 years no claims.. I sure didn't and that's because I didn't listen to people's advise.

Leave the car be, create a savings account if you really have that much free money, and then you'll probably find other things to spend it on, but if you're still after that power, then go down the road of something with a little more stock power.

My Second car was going to be an Ibiza FR or Cupra diesel, massive power, and with a few pocket friendly add-ons, would see the high side of 200brake / 400 nm. But then a week after checking quotes and finance (YES A WEEK!!!) I caused a 3 car shunt in a very embarressing accident. Bye bye hopes of a 1.9TDI. Hello Cliosport lol.

Hmmm yeah looks like it will be a waste of money to mod it that much.

I might aswell listen to people who are in the know and go for some "pocket friendly style mods"

How much do you think i could pick up a 172 for? and would the insurance be much as i would only be 18 with hopefully 1 years no claims and pass plus?

cheers

You can get a mk1 172 for about £4k+ iirc and your looking at about £2.5-3k for the insurance. you can either have pass plus or 1 ncb, not both.

good advise from Jeff there, I've spent quite a bit on mine and they are just subtle mods and an IK, havent got for an exhaust because as youve heard the IK gives a nice sound already and isnt too boy racer in an under powered car sorta sound.

But it is hard to choose what to do, I could have saved that money and spent it on more worth while things or even bought a s**t first car and got a 172 next year but I'm happy with what I've done to my car and how ever much I'd love to, I couldnt really afford to run a 172. And tbh my car does 100 fine so what more do I need?? I can get a lot more adrenaline going on a cheap quick bike than being in a RS clio. :)

  Mk2 clio sport
yeah i have just taken my exhust off my corsa to sell it and it makes a much nicer sound, more similar to a tuned engine than a ruded up crappy enging

apart from the Ik what other subtle mods have you done,

I was thinking of some black multi spoke
alloys to start with

cheers

Best ring around it totally depends on loads of factors. Ben_p on her pis 19 and pays about £3.5k I think but he has points so keep a nice clean licence and it will help.
You can pick up a very high milage 172 for £2.5k or a Mk2 phase 2 for £5k.
Aim for £6k and you can get some quite good value just remember to take account of servicing the 72k/5yr service is about £500 as the cambelts need changing.
You could always go look at a 1.8 or Williams Mk1 Clio you cna get them on insurance cheaper as classics and there just if not quicker.

I've got full leather interior from a 172 exclusive, mk1 172 alloys, k&n IK, ph2 rear lights, clear side repeaters, silvervisions, -60mm apex suspension kit.
and also paid out for new head gasket, new tyres, new front brakes, tax and lots of petrol so spent quite a bit since I've had it. MOT and insurance soon :)
