Best small capacity MP3 player?

I want something small that will hold at least a few hundred songs. Ideally it should work with the XBox which suggests iPod but I'd like to know the options.

Going off my plays with the older ones, I wasn't impressed with the sound quality at all.

Being a person that just doesn't use the Clio stereo because it's crap and spends £15 a metre on speaker wire, what's out there ??

I got the gf a 1GB Shuffle. Seems alright tbh
