Black Ph2 172 Daily Track Toy

  172 sport
Thought i would start a little thread about my 172. Had a very colourful car history so far, never owned a renaultsport until now ( wish i had got one sooner). Know a few people on here from my local area, very helpful and friendly.

Got offered this 172 as a swap off a friend of mine for my 106 gti, i know the previous four owners of the car. Its a very well looked after and well used example. This isnt no show car, its used as it was intended imo.

The day i got it home, 134,000 miles on it well ran in and running nicely

So far its had a few bits and pieces changed and modified

15" team dyanmics pro race 1.2's
40mm apex lowering springs
custom decat and catback exhaust
ktec style homemade intake with ramair filter
RS tuning remap 144whp/174bhp

The day after i got it i was due on a trackday at my local track, checked the car over, replaced both track rod ends got the tracking adjusted and sent it round the track and had so much, car had so much potential

few pics of my first trackday

After the trackday i realised i need to work on some weak points in the car. Tyres and brakes. Ordered some federal 595 rsr, brembo front brake pads, pagid rear pads, ATE super blue racing brake fluid and a full fluid change and brake bleed, also gave the calipers a tidy up. Car felt much better after this. Used it on the next track day, no brake fade and tyres worked great even in the wet.

Next up i decided i wanted a bucket seat and harness, so picked up for a reasonable price locally and went and collected. Made my own subframe in my spare time at work, ordered some harness eye bolts and got it all fitted. Also stripped the rear seats, isofix bar, rear seatbelts and drivers seatbelt out for some weight saving.

lol at that first picture!

Nice looking car! I see you've also come from a 106. Different aren't they!

Thanks. Yeh I've had lots of different cars, my 106 was an accident though. Had a astra coupe turbo and it went bang one night, needed a car for work the next day, bought a 106 flat arch with 16v motor off a mate, which I then swapped for a gti a week later and then swapped for clio two weeks later. Haven't done to bad really lol

Nope it's not a myth lol unfortunately I was moving on a bit, just missed the tyre barrier and ended up on the grass.

That's the downfall of my local track, it's very short, very twisty, alot of right hand corners. Puts massive strain on the n/s wheels and tyres, with my car being quite soft it and big sidewall tyres it leans onto the sidewall, eventually the tyre just give up and popped off the bead. One damaged pro race 1.2 and dead tyre. All sorted now tho wheel repaired and federals fitted. Must have been a sign

I can imagine seats like thst being a ballache on the road lol.

Where did you go for the number plate and is it legal?

Nah they are fine on the road because they cut outs in the side for checking blindspots the filled in ones are abit naughty though lol

Got it from fancy plates not sure on legality though

Is that teesside mate? I'm in Newcastle but still haven't done teesside yet. Car looks good.

Yeh it's teesside. Really good track for the money that they charge. Like i said above though very harsh on the car compared to bigger tracks.

How you finding the Seats Scott? good to see that car finally getting some love
Love it so far mate, thinking of getting another one next year. Trying to stop me getting bored and getting rid like I normally do. Something about these cars though, I'm normally bored and moved on by now

Fit some spacers on the rear yesterday. 15mm per side, sits perfect really happy with it. Just need to roll the lip on the inner arch catches on big bumps due to my soft suspension. Ignore the state of the car desperate need of a wash

It looks a LOT better though I've always been warned to stay away from spacers though im unsure of the theory/reasoning behind it.

Few reasons, cheap nasty non hubcentric spacers can cause vibrations. Spacers in general can put strain on wheel bearing apparently. I've ran them on many cars and never had any problems though

Not been much happening with this lately due to weather and Christmas time

Managed to get the inlet painted satin black and give the bay a very quick clean. Next up I want to move the battery in the boot when I can find out what cable I need for the live

Is it easy to remove the inlet? As I've been quoted £112 to fit a matched inlet and would rather not pay that!

Would the harness bar not have been better going to the rear suspension?

I think you should get a ktec rear boot mat :)

The upper inlet is about 5 minutes to remove, I've never removed the lower so not so sure but read it can be a pain on aircon models.

No I don't really want my harness fastened into my rear suspension top mounts they not the strongest part to attach a harness to.

It's no show car don't need no boot mat lol

  172
Which one is it they remove the lower?
I just thought it would look better as I noticed you hadnt gone the whole hog and removed the whole interior so assumed you wanted a bit of comfort/looks.

update from today, a friend of mine was selling his 2month old whiteline rear anti roll bar so i snapped it up and got it fit today. Havnt driven the car hard since fitting so cant comment on how well it works but it looks great
