Black smoke the saga continues....

Ok I took the car back in this morning as there is still a cloud of black smoke every time I accelerate.

This happens when the car is hot or cold Any time i rev to about 3 - 4k rpm from idle I get a cloud of black smoke.

Yesterday they cleaned the EGR valve and sent me on my way. As soon as I got home I got my girlfriend to rev the car and still there was a cloud of black smoke with every rev.

They called today and told me there is nothing wrong with the car that they have checked the EGR valve and it is fine.

When I took it in this morning I asked if I could show a mechanic before I left it in case the black smoke was normal. He came out with me and got in the passenger seat. I said he would have to get out as you can't see it from within the car. He got out watched as I revved. He said that these cars can give out a bit of black smoke but he didn't think it was normal when revving from idle.

They say I can go in today before 4.15 and go for a road test with a mechanic. i explained going on a road test does not illustrate the problem as you need to be outside the car to see the smoke. They said I can go and show this to the mechanic.

I am confused and really don't know what to do!?!? Is this normal? Are they just trying to get rid of me cause the car drives normally and they can't trace the problem or (all joking aside superfastdan) am I just being paranoid and is this cloud of black smoke absolutely normal with this car a Clio (DCI 1.5 65)

Help please!!!!

Good idea cheers Mark. I have just had so much conflicting advice. Some people saying it is fine some saying it isn't. The most worrying was the mech telling me it didnt seem normal this monring and then them telling me there is nothing wrong this afternoon!!

Hi,

Sorry to drag this one out.

I asked for some advice on the parkers board. They have recomended that I sell up becasue the car will get knackered doing the short journies that I now do.I went from 100 miles a day down to 4 miles a day!!

They also asked if my turbo whistles at all. If I accelerate really really hard the turbo does makea faint whistling noise. It is very faint but sounds like and electric drill spinning up to speed. Does this mean the turbo is on it's way out? I have never really listened before so don't know if this noise is normal or not!!

Thanks Dave

A diesel is much better for short drive than a petrol petrol corrodes metal diesel is a lubricator. When the engine cold petrols run rich which makes them more prown to wear diesel don't suffer from this.

Get the dealership to do a pressure check on the turbo check the presure gauages are wokgin if the pressure values give off gfaulse reasings then the ECU puts in more fule thinkign there laods of availiable air which it isn't hence the black smoke.

You cars still under warently isn't it if so take it to another dealership some dealers are usless.

Do you not know anyone else with a dci 65 there quite common you might find that what you think of as a lot is totally normal mine I'd bet gives off a bit if I ever looked.

Cheers edde.

I am probably just being paranoid (as usual). I think I am realy just trying to find any old excuse to sell up and get a sport!! I will take a wee video of the smoke perhaps you could give your opinion?

It is under warenty yup so good plan. Anyone know if the cleaned EGU will be in the central system (if there is such a thing)!?!?

I took it for a good blast (within the speed limit) up the motor way tonight and it is running sweet so there is probably nothing wrong at all :D

  Brisol my lover..
Was superfast on about the time with the Laguna at work...FCUK ME!!!! that was soooo funny you couldnt see your hand in front of your face, i have never seen so much smoke...

Feel free to put up a video if its realy bad it should show up.
What central thing are you talking about?
You can pick up a cheap phase 1 172 for the same pruice as your awhich is the way I'd go personally if you want a 172.

Cheers guys. Don't think there is anything wrong with it I am almost certain I was just being paranoid. I will take it into another dealer and get a second opinion.

It is running perfectly. There is only really a small puff of black smoke if I sit and rev hard. Much less than before the EGR valve was cleaned up.

Edde I was wondering if there was a central database that the EGR valve clean would have been logged against. I just don't want to take it to a second dealership who say the "EGR valve has just been cleaned why are you wasting our time!!"

I am hoping I can get an exchange for a phase 1 172 or a phase 2 172 for the car and some ££. especialy as I am only a short distance from work. I could bus to work and keep the 172 for weekends....

Fingers crossed.

Ther a central database but they won't care.
I wouldn't worry though.
