hey bud, we have had a couple at work that have had similiar faults, ( i work for renault), common cause is heater plugs not working causing the EGR valve to stick, this can cause reduced power and smoking! you would ned to get it to a dealer or take the EGR valve out, its under the airbox, 3 10mm bolts, and see if its clogged up with crap! but if i remember correctly, though dont quote me, heater plugs arent covered by warranty, they are classed as servicable item!!:D

  mk1 RT
my 1.4rt kicks out a mushroom cloud of thick black smoke on start up and when changing gear

its only done 54k on a k reg i think its burnt/dropped a valve or 3

Cheers All. Assuming that it is that problem. Will it do the car any damage to drive it? I need to drive to work on Monday. Onyl a 10 min drive. I assume I have been driving it about with the probelm alredy as it wasn't till people I know were following me that it was spotted.

It wouldn't bother me depends how bad it is but tunning usualyl makes them smoke a bit so your no worse than that.

It is basicaly a puff of black smoke every time the car is reved. It happens from cold. It smells quite bad. Like burnt toast!!!!

Black smoke? So you think it is normal?
Its not normal its a sign there unburned fuel old diesel used to do this new ones don't as the much better fueled plus they have soot traps etc.

Cheers. Booked in for a check on Thursday. Spoke to the mechanic on the phone said it could be the EGR valve, turbo going or the intercooler going.

It is only a DCI 65 so don't think it has an intercooler.

He told me what could happen if it is the turbo going. Sounds scary. Something called running away where the engine starts burning oil and i have to stall the engine (as it wont switch off) to prevent damage. Rather than getting out and running away even though black smoke will be pouring from the engine!! Think I will just not drive it!!

I hope it is the EGR valve!!! He said it should be covered under warranty as long as I have had the car serviced at the correct times, which I have.

  Whichever has fuel
we had a laguna that suffered with 'running away'...
Twas the funniest thing i've ever seen in my life!! The service driver was just going round and round in circles in the car, being followed by tonnes and tonnes of white smoke (seriously, you couldn't see for about ten minutes!) all the mechanics were shouting at him, and then eventually, it went bang! Fooking hillarious!!

Just in case that running away did happen whats the best way to stall the engine? put it in 5th and hit the breaks?!?!?

just put it in neutral, and when you stop the car, put it in first and take your foot off the clutch whilst keepintg the other foot on the brake!

Your right the 65 doesn't have an intercooler.

The turbo issue he is on about isn't anything to do with this what happens is the oil feed pipe gets disconnected and the oil gets into the turbo spooling it up and sending it into the engine the engie revs like mad since it has all the oil to burn and after a bit when its burned all its oil out the turbo bearing give up as they have no cooling and melt.

EGR value its 99% likly to be.
