Black wheel bolts

At work we've started a new process that adds a black protective coating to ferrous metals, and I got the idea to refresh my tired looking wheel bolts. I did one at first to see how it came out.

shot blasted and blacked;

the gloss finish is it in the final stage, it's bathed in oil to 'seal' the coating. I put it in a bag with more oil for a couple of days and here it is finished;

I would have taped up the thread tbh, incase the paint made the bolt come loose. But they look good mate

Used to machine truck wheel studs and they needed this kind of coating, used to use a company by Runcorn that used to dip them in some chemicals abd make them black.

In one of the top pics, have you heated the bolt up and then dipped it in used engine oil to achieve the black effect? That is a process I remember using years ago to coat things.

Not runcorn anodizers is it? We've used them a few times.

its called chemi black, you degrease it, condition it, black it then oil it, all at room temperature. its a nifty little process lol

How resistant is it to being taken on and off?

no idea yet, after putting it on gently it seems to have 'polished' the black a little bit. may tighten it up properly to see how it reacts

Could well have been Runcorn Anodizers. I think from Chester you turn off the motorway towards the blue bridge down to the roundabout with the part time traffic lights and I think you turn off there down to an ind est and it was on the right.
(it was a good 10 yrs ago though)

We send a fair amount of stuff to be blacked, There is 2 types though, One isn't very resilient and looks dull and another comes out in a gloss black, that always looks stunning and seems to last much longer.

I can't remember the exact name of the processes.

Lol at sharpie :p

Dan, this process usually makes them glossy... But because I did them pretty much DIY theyve came out a bit satin, gonna see how resilient the coating is when I get home :)

plus, the finish of the coating is usually based on the base metal, since I shot blasted it, it was matt anyway, if I polished it up first itd probably come out glossy
