Re: The 'TeamAriane' clio... Ghetto goodness.
well, where does one start...
as a good few know i set the weekend aside to go to birmingham, help fred (that went well) and destroy him with norfbest drinking/ballooning skills. We aranged for a cam/aux belt change and new clutch but that was just the start...
What i didnt realise however is how fcuking good this boy is, now it may seem i'm blowing smoke up his arse here but its for a reason, and below will entail that, believe me if he was s**t i'd say.... i've used him before for the megs auxbelt change but left the car with him so not really had a chance to see him do his ting.
so friday.... arrived at BTM with alexC to find the engine sat on the floor looking sorry for itself
fred pulls me to the side and shows me the clutch release fork, unfortunately the pics dont show it but he said he's not seen one so so bad, basically it had hit temps not far off 1000deg as it was fried and white/melted. least it had been looked after...
normal one on the left..
the clutch and all its ancilleries(sp) basically ate itself inside the car. noice.
so cracking on fred and sam (who we'll get to later) continued to pull the engine apart to its bare bones, lifting the top off and checking timing and things that i couldnt even begin to explain. Fred shouted at me, shouted at sam, started smoking again and carried on. warren showed up as did the duck and fred had another (f)red bull.
I noticed more and more bits coming off the engine, which started to look more and more pathetic, i was thinking is that really a 2litre?! but what shocked and pleased me was the fact fred was noticing things i thought mundane and whilst teaching sam the ropes it gave him a chance to open the engine more and look at things that i hadnt priced or considered, attention to detail being an understatement.
the new clutch went on and the box put back on with new forks and bolts.
whilst i dicked about and got shouted at again
fred told me to be useful so i swapped the clear indicators from the rear into the front and the rainbow ones went to the back
warren and myself also wired in the phase 2 lights using fubars CS guide, one side seemed gammy though so we left that to get fred to look at on the sat/sunday.
whilst all the above was going on fred was busy playing with the cam timings, he wasn't happy, he had some assisting kit sent up from TDF and played with the cam timings, it was out.
so the head came off and the internals were messed with, its again at this point i lost the flow of what was happening, alot of 'glue removal', 'cam checking', 'retiming' was carried out.
fred took the head away to be cleaned and sam with freds instruction cleaned the link and gaps in the engine. the head was bought back and sprayed up, apparently this shows better if anything escapes
the head was put back on, this took AGES, and torque wrenched on with the vibrating thing to exact specs that fred called out, sam got one wrong and fred made him do them all again!
fred continued to play with the timing and set it up, it was this that impressed me the most as the dedication to the build was spot on, i questioned him as you do and the short reply was 'theres a reason i havent had an engine come back yet'. oil filter put on, a random part taken from his 172 was added on too, i didnt ask lol!
and it was SOOOO COLDDDD, just thought i'd add that in.
hai partially rebuilt F4R
So after all the wait it was timed up and ready to go in... the above shot was taken at 5.17pm... and I set fred a motivational task, 'get it in and running first time in two hours or you have to drink 2 ladyboys tonight'
'gimme something hard to do please' was the reply...
from this point onwards there was alot of muttering and squeezing about, the F4R is a snug fit and they were both really concerned that they didnt squash or leave pipes in a precarious position, fred said he's seen it before and even if the customer doesnt notice, he's not having a cable wrapped around something it doesnt need to be...
i left them to it and removed some internals from the interior, the bonnet carpet and cleaned up the magnecor leads, it gave me something to do in the minus 4 temps.
We were go carting that night so a few locals started to appear, withoutabix in the GP...
time was getting on and i reminded BTM of this every minute
still relaxed and adament that he'd do it fred, along with sams help connected the rest of the engine vitals back up. not the clean leads, ithankyou. radiator on, coolant in, gearbox oil in, oil in, mounts torqued up to his specification (again anal doesnt cut it)
7.13pm. fred pulls the MAP sensor off christophers 182, norfbest stylee and primes the fuel pump, with four minutes to go it is in, priming and ready... i hope.
it starts.
Smug bast4rd.
we all go gokarting, find out that freds assistant is the fastest driver in the WORLD, fred comes last, my steering wheel snaps off and we generally have a great time bar the motorway not being gritted and dying.
Saturday, arrived at the workshop after being reminded how s**t my life is..
focus today would be finishing the running gear and get her ready for testing.
a charged cup came in for assesment and work, along with a monaco 172 that we realised as the day went on was in a right sorry state
both cars were seen to and worked on whilst sam and fred finished tightening mine up and bolting her back together. again watching the workmanship was great, a screwdriver to his ear listening for minutes, going off and coming back with things to help poorly cars.
fog lights out this week and some additions to the grill to erm give it an individual touch to follow but she went back together like new.
unwanted aircon leftovers, motor to come out in feb with next upgrades.
so wheels on, played with a little more and i was sent out of the workshop slowly and told to take it easy.
she span through third, possibly.
pulled her back in for the night and fred posed for his BTM xmas cards.
i wont talk about sat night nor will i show pictures, NSFW and embarresing come to mind, lets just say when we pulled upto BTM on the sunday afternoon fred looked like he'd been on holiday to chernobyl, n<3rfbest nights do that to ya KID!
fred realised that the light that was failing was due to a knackered socket so he took a light off the dynacup and tried that, it worked! result, he then fixed the dodgy window and its regulator.
soldering iron was used more than a swearword over the weekend, as he rebuilt some cables and connections in the bay too, god knows what though.
Ladies and Gents, Je Presentee 'Blood Diamond'
and home to TeamArianeHQ...
first impressions, god the suspension is crap APEX springs and SPAX rear dampers, but they'll be off asap, the exhaust is cringeworthy too, love the manual cable though, really pure and full of character, soon as i left i could see the throttle body will need replacing soon as it sticks everynow and again, no biggy though, on the motorway its ok, no megane but its a ten year old car people forget and untill the megs fixed it will suit me fine, the gearbox and change is beautiful, factory fresh, as is the engine, which just sings. riads car at the end of the day and he loves it too, no warning lights, heaters work, what more can i ask for...
this weeks plans are a fresh MOT, exhaust chopped out at DANMAR, (gotta wait until feb when the next batch of yozza's arrive
), cover the fogs, clean her, fit some xenons and source some better brakes.
and knowing us, some cheeky changes will be arriving and going on over the next month.
its a nail, but i LOVE it, excuse pics they are all blackberry, ALOT more updates to come
thanks to alex for the lift, TDF for parts and advice, warren for the samosas, but a HUGE thank to fred@BTM for his scarily good skills, efforts in going above and beyond... seriously mate top drawer!
oh and his young padawan Sam.
