BLOODY CLUTCH CABLES : (

  Bumder With A Buffer

Had a good day so far, my clutch cable snapped on the way to work about a mile from my house, this is the second one ive had snap in 10 months!!!! why are they so crap??? And to top it off had to move the old dears car off the drive to get out and 4got to put her keys back!!! Whoops!! Is there a design fault with these cables????

Can often be a common fault for cables to break on large engined small cars due to the available space. I recal the 205 Gti had big problems with the speedo cable always snapping due to the dodgy angle it was routed through. Might be worth checking the correct path for routing the cable, and ensure nothing is causing excessive bends in it!

Mate i had the same problem apart from mine was 3 cables in 8 months. I was told that i needed a bit for my clutch. I got it fixed and ive had no probs now! Ill try and find out the name of the bit for ya!

richy,

yeah there is - well its not a design fault, but you can buy a new clutch pedal for it, which is supposed to have eliminated the problem, i got told this when mine went.

i just changed the cable when mine snapped last september, and its still fine.

Mine snapped not so long ago and i can still feel it sticking sometimes!
When mine snapped the 1st time and was replaced, every now and then id get a horrible snap from my pedal and it would feel like it had snapped again then retrun to normal. This only happened a few times though. Do u reckon id get away with taken it to Renault and getting them to sort it out coz its a crap design?????!!!!!! ;)

Well had my clutch cable replaced today and it feels 10 times softer than when it was replaced b4 8 months ago. So maybe i had a dodgy cable last time or it wasnt fitted correctly!

Im happier now :)

had mine replaced the last week, the day i got it i thought now thats a lot better. But now its getting back to normal. Maybe its the pedal thats f**ked? wat do u think? Its making a kinda creaking noise, and every now and again it clicks loudly? Maybe the ratchet like 2 live said.

If its not a design fault - then what is it? Renault realised the problems shortly after the release of both the R19 16v & clio willy / 16v. I think i hold the record for clutch cables on this forum! After finding out about the ped replacment i contacted Renault and got them to fit it. Since then ive had no bother!!

The old design placed too much pressure on the end of the clutch cable, you can see it bend over the top the ped if look. They always snap in the same place. The new design doesnt route the same way - taking pressure away from the end of the cable.

If this is not a design fault - then what is it? I got Renault UK to pay for this work in full after only being told about it after replacing 2 clutch cables already. It should have been a recall if you ask me, watch them go all quite when you ask them.

I did two cables on my old RT before the whole pedal gave way. Luckily I had a friend who works for the AA who repaired it all. He told me later that there was indeed a fault with the ratchet system and that there was a re-call.

Obviously not every one took their cars back though?
