BMW 130i M-Sport & BMW 335d Tourer

  Audi A4 AVANT 1.9TDi
Hi all. Two reports here...

First, a massive four day detail to the 1-series...

*EDIT, you may want to run and stick kettle on whilst you wait for images to load.....!*

BMW 130i M-Sport Limited Edition – Carbon Black

Booked in over four days for a “White Detail” (Major Paint Correction, wheels-off, engine-bay and (in this instance, light) interior work)

The car in question is a 2007 model with a shade under 40k miles on the clocks. My customer made the purchase just five weeks ago; a West Midlands based Sytner BMW dealership.

Buying the car ‘blind’, the sales-man at the time reassured my customer that the car is to Sytner’s quality ‘approved standards’ and is ready for collection when they were… You can see where this is going, can’t you?

Collection, unfortunately, was at evening whilst it was wet outside. A few bad areas were noted at the time and my customer wasn’t happy. The car was left with the dealer for rectification.

Second time round, little improvement. Albeit a few years old now, this was a £15k purchase and the car was a mess – no excuses on Sytner’s behalf.

Rather than let the dealer’s try again, my customer chose to seek external professional advice.

A brief insight to the damage caused by the bodyshop ‘repairs’:

The usual buffertrails from incorrect machine polisher use..

The wheels, although ‘fully’ refurbed, didn’t come up very well at all. Lazy refurb; inner rim and wheel-nut housings were covered in overspray which I couldn’t remove.

With all four corners complete, it was time to wash the bodywork down and remove surface contaminants.

Pre-rinse with AS Hazsafe. Foamed with Bilt Hamber AutoFoam. Washed with Dodo BTBM. Tar removal with AS Tardis and clayed with AMDetails’ mild clay bar.

Very little protected seen on the paintwork, (see if you can spot the machine holograms shining through!)

Once fully dried down, the wheels were back off for sealing and caliper/disc refurb.

Retaining springs removed and sprayed,

High on the roof, the thickness readings were original (and healthy)

Initial pad and polish tests weren’t enough; paint was seriously hard. Settled on 2/3 hits of Menz 3.02 and a foamed wool pad for heavy cut.

Moving on to the bonnet, it wasn’t particularly bad.

DSC_0257.jpg

Very difficult to correct though; much different to the rest of the car (even the other painted areas), it didn’t like heat at all.

A painfully slow process involved here. Lost count of how many passes were made to chase 95% correction…

DSC_0281.jpg

N/S half of the roof. Some nasties seen here:

DSC_0287.jpg

Reduced down to,

DSC_0288.jpg

The overspray on the N/S A-pillar?

DSC_0293.jpg

DSC_0295.jpg

Gloss-black section on the N/S sorted, too:

DSC_0296.jpg

DSC_0298.jpg

Area of caution here now... the N/S rear quarter where it meets the bumper, there was a bit of a thin spot.

DSC_0299.jpg

DSC_0300.jpg

Knowing I can’t polish over the area for fear of a burn through, I managed to cover the affected spot and work around it.

DSC_0301.jpg

DSC_0305.jpg

Managed to achieve good correction too!

50/50 between N/S door and rear quarter:

DSC_0309.jpg

Some bad scratches in that rear quarter… Almost as though the car’s been brushed passed a hedge or similar? Scratches running the length of the car.

DSC_0302.jpg

Again, losing count of how many compounding passes had to be made to chase perfection.

DSC_0308.jpg

Rear bumper before:

Sytner’s “approved standards”. I quote, “We pride ourselves on staff retention and investment in training so we have highly trained and experienced team members working hard to deliver the very best quality of vehicle servicing and repair.”

A funny looking repair on the N/S wing mirror. Before/After:

DSC_0329.jpg

DSC_0330.jpg

After some 18 hours machine polishing, the car’s complete and ready to go out for a rinse.

DSC_0331.jpg

DSC_0335.jpg

DSC_0337.jpg

DSC_0338.jpg

DSC_0339.jpg

DSC_0340.jpg

At this point, the engine bay was cleansed.

DSC_0341.jpg

DSC_0343.jpg

DSC_0344.jpg

Soaked with degreaser, agitated and rinsed at low pressure.

Similar process to the doors shuts and then a thorough blast to remove all trapped dust and polish residues between panel gaps, petrol filler housing etc.

DSC_0346.jpg

Once inside and bone-dry (Black Baron vehicle dryer comes in handy here), the engine was dressed:

DSC_0348.jpg

And the first of two coats of Raceglaze Black Label Concours wax applied:

DSC_0351.jpg

DSC_0355.jpg

With darkness just around the corner, that was it for Day 3.

DSC_0363.jpg

Bright and early, day 4, second coat of wax applied.

DSC_0370.jpg

Sytner stickers (on owner’s request) removed throughout:

DSC_0372.jpg

Glass polished inside and out with 3M’s cleaner:

DSC_0373.jpg

Sun-visor mirror looking a tad grubby! (the rest of the engrained dirt on the visor was picked up later on the interior stage)

DSC_0375.jpg

Grille before:

DSC_0379.jpg

And after (even managed to shift the overspray!)

Would I buy a car from the Sytner group? Yes. Would I let them valet, repair, touch, breath on the car? No.

Before parting with thousands of pounds, be it a new, an ex-demo or used car, always make sure you know what you’re buying.

Thanks for reading.

Single day Minor Paint Correction Detail with and interior tidy.

After a two hour drive, my customer arrived at the unit just after 8am – a long day ahead!

Being a 6 month old ex-demo car, you wouldn’t think it would need much work, would you? Trouble is, ex-demo, the car was probably washed every time it went out (and we all know how bad a Dealership valet can be!)

The roof was covered in straight line scratches; all the way from the boot-lid across to the windscreen. A regular visitor to the automated car wash I think!

If that wasn’t enough, look what I found… Ha! (car wash bristle)

Hate that, why can’t he/she who last fitted the wheels onto the car align the BMW badge with the M-Sport logo…? (My OCD shining through a little bit here perhaps)

On the 320d completed earlier in the year, as it was a wheels-off job, I made a point of doing it myself!

DSC_0476.jpg

DSC_0479.jpg

Anyway, due to the heat, only a handful of photos were captured throughout the wash stage.

Engine bay rinsed down, wheels & arches and then the extensive wash sequence. (pre-wash, two buckets etc)

DSC_0044.jpg

With some nasties on the bonnet: (requiring a Major Paint Correction Detail to completely remove)

DSC_0052.jpg

Now, this isn’t the first time I’ve come across this on the more recent BMWs, but both the drivers and passenger side of the car had vertical scratches from the sill up. Probably the lowest 9/10 inches of the doors were suffering…

DSC_0053.jpg

DSC_0048.jpg

And an example of the same issue on the other e91 Tourer I’ve worked on.

DSC_0284.jpg

The marks have to be pre-delivery/transport related. A protective film applied to the lower quarters perhaps? Either way, it makes me laugh; this is a car that BMW were using as their ‘demo’ model for 6 months. A good example, heh?

Here are the marks on the O/S front door:

DSC_0039.jpg

DSC_0040.jpg

Higher up on the door, just the usual swirling and light scratches:

DSC_0047.jpg

But the lower panels were shocking:

DSC_0045.jpg

With the delicate areas taped and paint thickness assessed, it was time to crack on. Starting with the defects down the sides of the door.

I initially gave a “minor correction” pass but straight away spotted it would require some more.

DSC_0056.jpg

Before:

DSC_0059.jpg

After:

DSC_0060.jpg

DSC_0061.jpg

DSC_0063.jpg

Multiple hits with a more aggressive approach had to be taken to remove the marks. Shocking. This is a 6 month old £46k car.

Menzerna 203s was used on the rest of the car – a polish combination strong enough to make improvements but at the same time mild enough to refine down to a hologram free, crisp finish.

DSC_0089.jpg

A giveaway that the N/S rear wheel had been refurbed before selling the car on… Old wheel weight residues covered in silver paint. Cheeky!

DSC_0090.jpg

DSC_0091.jpg

A bit of a tough day; not the smallest of cars and the heat wasn’t helping either. Once all the machine work had been completed, the car was rinsed down to remove any polishing dusts and brought back in for a thorough dry down and an IPA wipe to remove polishing oils.

Paintwork protected with Dodo’s Supernatural wax.

DSC_0112.jpg

External britework cleansed with Jeffs Prime:

DSC_0093.jpg
DSC_0094.jpg

DSC_0096.jpg

Alloys sealed, tyres dressed and exhausts polished.

With the engine already dressed, the glass was dealt with with 3M’s cleaner and then the interior given a quick tickle – half the contents of a beach removed (lots of sand trapped in crevices and button surrounds?!)

13 long hour’s later, fini.

Lovely car.

Great work as always.

Before I comment, you know I love your work. Could sit and read it for hours. And if I ever buy a second hand car for the family, I will be giving it to you before bringing it home!!

Now jim, you are way too critical about the standard of cars that dealerships hand over. BUT!!! That 130 was SHOCKING!!! And the end result was nothing short of astounding.

Hats off to you mate, awesome work.

Cheers guys.

Daniel, I know.. recently though I've seen lots of ex-demo, 'approved' used cars and cars with merely delivery miles on the clocks in a poor, poor condition. It annoys me that the main 'multi-million pound' Group dealers are getting away with it. Sytner for example. Massive! (yet they're cutting corners on the simplest of things as seen above). Fair enough, 90% of the population wouldn't know the difference but if I took my car to have a bump sorted on the rear bumper and it came back like THIS, they'd be wearing it! :rasp:

130 was shameful Jim, couldnt believe the pigtails when I saw it at the weekend. To say it had been repaired and then taken back to be 'improved' on by Sytner.
I am looking forward to your next report. ;)

Great write up, too many pics for my internetz to handle though. Remember that vxrmarc thread when he inspected the delivery of his new vxr nurburgring - that crashed my laptop big style.
This not quite as bad lol

Keep up the good work, and get some new combats! :rasp:

Immense work there Jim! That's some of your best correction work right there. Sadly it seems the bodyshop have let the dealer down but also the quality control has let the dealer down.

Jim to the rescue!

Hopefully see more from you soon mate. :)

That 130i was appalling! :dapprove:

335d identical to ours! ...that one look a little tidier that ours though, once you were done with it.

Nice cars the 335d, Chris! I'm actually up your way for the next three days; keep an eye out for the blue avant!

Cheers Gally - still wasn't 100% i'm afriad; too many nasties to begin with... TBH, not sure if I have ever done a complete '100%' job! ;)

Thanks d4vy/tommys.

JMR, heh yeah, new combats! Grr. Will let you know about Sunday - if the weather holds (at the minute the forecast is awful!) it should be a good day.

I like the honesty mate, 100% is not achievable on 99% of used cars never mind one in that condition.

Was one of the main reasons I stopped doing major corrections, expectation was ridiculous and unless they are in the know regarding RDS and swirls they just expect 100% perfection on old heaps.

These days I have the luxury of doing enhancements on cars of my choice.

Awesome work. The 130 was woeful originally though - proof if ever it were needed to check a car properly before you buy it!!

You can do my Trophy if you like Gally, a nice little holiday for you as well ;)
