Bolt-on engine mods?

It's time for my MK1 RSI (18.i) to get a little more power :D

First of all, I'm thinking about an induction kit. Should I just go straight for a K&N, or are there alternatives that are better for Clios that I don't know about?

K, after much searching and researching I'm still straching my head a little :dapprove:

My engine has done 110k, and I don't even know if it's ever had a timing belt. I'm just waiting for it to die, so I can drop a 2.0 16v willy in there! Hence, I'm not spending 200 squid on a brand new apollo/viper.

Having said that, the engine never misses a beat! It seem like it will last forever. Anyhoo, the question is...

Is one of these cone style filters a waste of time? Engine bay heat etc?

Would it be better to go for a s/h apollo/viper of any old car and jimmy something together? I'm thinking, my broken passenger-side fog lamp could be utilised along with some hosing and bag-ties ;)
