Bonnet respray advice

Hi,

I'm in the process of getting some quotes for a bonnet respray. The first one I have been to is saying that it is best if the spraying is blended into the wings. Is this true or is this a way of hiding a poor colour match?

I realise with metallic paint resprays the blend in is more important but is this essential with a matt colour (capsicum red)?

Also if anyone has any advice on how much I should expect to be paying for this that would help - I'm guessing about £200 +vat is the going rate

if its high solid then it depends how they are painting it, if theyre just painting it 2k, then it wont need laquering and blending wont be needed.

if they are basecoat/laquering (unlikely if its high solid) then it could be blown into the wings

Ok well it sounds like it really depends! It's a bonnet for a Clio trophy so a new bonnet would have to come from Renault main dealer - so pretty pricey.

A bonnet for a trophy is just the same as any other clio bonnet of that shape isn't it ??

Yes it is the same bonnet but even if I bought a new bonnet it would still need painting - I don't need a new bonnet, just to respray my current one...the first quote I've had said they would blend spraying into wings, I'm just not sure this is necessary as it really bumps up the price.
I'm going to get more quotes this week...

they probly want to blend into the wings as reds are know to be a pain in the arse for matching so if they blended into the wings it wouldnt look stupid. its not a way of hiding a bad colour match, its how its done properly.

not with a high solid colour they wouldnt blend into the wings.

i dunno how renault paint them as ive never worked on one. are they basecoat/laquer or just high solid 2k?

get the whole front end done i just had my bonnet done and it looks a t**t agaist the wings poor colour match

Yes a few of the bodyshops have commented on red being an arse of a colour to match. The general consensus is that it should be blended into wings - this is going to cost about £300+ though which is a bit steep. I'm going to ring the mobile service Car Medic and see what they can do with a bit of touch up paint, fine sand paper and polish - it can probably be sorted for a fraction of a bonnet/wings respray....

How would you tell if a car was a high solid colour?

rub it with a mopping compound like G3, if it turns red, means its just high solid 2k (no laquer/no blending)

if it does nothing its basecoat/laquer which can be blended in.

you can paint it either, i know not many bodyshops would do basecoat/laquer on a high solid colour unless they was on a waterbased system as tbh its just a waste of materials

I polished a Black 106 GTi which was basecoat/laquer when the bodyshop painted the door the painted that ion single stage! Cheapskates.

As far as I am concerned the car is painted basecoat/laquer the repairs should be as well.
