Bought a 172, found some damage what should I do.

  Clio 04 172 Cup
The wife and I have recently bought a 172 cup from our local Renault dealer. The car looked great on the fore court apart from the missing headlight washer cap. Which they agreed to get replaced. So I had to go away to work for a few days and left the wife to the deal. She settled on £8700 for a 04 cup with 13700 on the clock and a years tax. I thought as we were buying from a dealer we would have to pay a little more. But then you get the comeback if things go wrong!
I was washing and polishing the car yesterday and found a few things wrong! It looks like the headlight has taken a hit as thier is a big chip out of the inside edge of it. So I lifted the bonnet to take a closer look and the headlight is held in by the bonnet as the fixings are all broken off! On further inspection the grill has a crack most of the way across at the same level as the chip in the headlight. I also found a shed load of vertical dents in the side of the car they are quite hard to see but after polishing they are very easy to see in the light.

What Im asking is do you think I should have a moan about it and get them to replace the damaged bits. Or should I have just looked at it harder!

Yep go back, you have a grace period to get your money back. Or tell them to get it all fixed!!

2 words----- Trading Standards ;)

Go back and give them hell! I would! Nothing to lose!

Main dealers cant sell you cars in that condition, especially not for £8.7k!!!

I think you should go back to the garage asap, someone there would have knowed about the damage i'm sure. I brought my mk2 172 in dec 05 and after the first week i noticed that some of the rear heated window elements were damaged and as a result they weren't working correctly, i also noticed i had a missing headlamp washer ball so i took it back to the Renault dealer i that i brought the car from and had all of the problems fixed.

Yes you probably should have looked a little harder, but theres so much to check.

Not all people are car literate, so dealers get away with more on some people, than they do with others...

You defo have 7 days to get your money back, but most dealers give you up to 30(if you kick up enough fuss). After that it's the Trading Standards, Ren-uk or the head office of the dealer.

Its only sometimes the more time you spend working on ther car, and seeing it from different angles and lights, that you spot all the inperfections.

I would be going back to the dealers and getting the bits rectified for sure.

always useful to try take a look at a car under different lights, say a garage forecourt at night (not very practical i know).

as if panels have been resprayed, and the paint is slightly metermeric, then it will stand out like a sore thumb.

Cheers for the replys. I did not buy it as sold as seen hence why I got it from a main dealer. I will take it back on monday and see what they say about it! It has been back to them once already as the suspension mod had not been done and the climate control panel was loose! I think the car is great so feel a bit akward but non the less it needs to be done.

If there is accident damage then I would suggest you will be ok.

The vertical dents you describe sound like car park dints where someone opens their door on your car leaving a very slight crease. Very difficult to remove. You may have to live with those.

MY mum and dads a neighbour is a dentmaster franchise'e so Ill see what he can with it if the dealer wont do anything about the dents.
I will be supprised if they dont do anything about the busted headlamp

Sounds liek the cars been in a accident whoch is common with the CUp's I'd get a suspension check down I'd bet its out.

put it back in the box get the recipet and take it back . lol
hope you get it sorted we need more cups on the roads .

Make sure the dealer doesn't try and lay the blame on you or your missus, with the old "well the damage wasn't there when we sold it to you - You must of done it..." routine.

I'm in a similar situation.

I've noticed a dent on the rear wheel arch. I bought the car on the 17th Feb and have been waiting for my spare key to turn up at the dealership before I take the car back. Now the keys there and I'm taking it up on Tuesday.

I mentioned the dent to a girl who phoned me up as a courtesy call to check all is well with the car. I've not mentioned it to the salesman though when maybe I should have.

Going to show him it on Tuesday but I doubt they'll do anything now.

You're right though, no matter how much you think you've checked a car out, you notice all manner of marks and imperfections once you get it home and wash it.

When you say recently , how recent ?

Like you say , buying from a dealer you " should " have some comeback if anything is wrong . But if quite a bit of time has passed they " might " try and put the blame on you or you could be lucky and get the repair for free .

Take it back mate , tell them your not happy and what are they gonna do about it . Definitely sounds like some kind of accident damage which they should have sorted before it was put on the forecourt .

Sold as seen does still apply by the way if your buying private , auction etc ... but this only applys to how the car looks , not the mechanical side .
You pay good money , you want a good car with no damage .

We have only had the car less than 2 weeks and 4 days of that were spent in the dealership getting the suspension mod done. IM sure they will sort it out the seem to be very good. I can see it has been in an accident or some kind of bump on the bonnet thier is a crease right on the bottom edge just above the grill.

Take it straight back, but don't start mouthing off like these idiots will tell you to, it will get you nowhere. If someone came into my garage ranting and raving, the last thing i'd do is help!!
just be straight, and say i bought this car in good faith, and paid extra because i wanted peace of mind from a dealer, and i thought it was going to be checked out properly, can you solve the issue?? Any dealer worth their own will say yes and be happy to help...

^^^^ totally agree ^^^^

No need to mouth off ! Seems to be some peoples answer to everything . Tell them your problem and you'll get more help than going in with all guns blazing .

A good paintless dent removal guy should be able to sort the dents fairly easily. The dealer will have a guy they use for there work already probably.

I have no intention of going in thier all gums blazing as I know what it is like to get an earfull from an unhappy customer. As has been said I will politly ask for the faults to be fixed! Im sure they will sort it out.

The suspension mod is for the Cups where on full right hand lock thier is a knocking sound something to do with the strut rubbing on something not to aure I found out about on another thread.

i know you bought from a dealer but if you're paying 7-9 k for a car then why not do a car check?? it only costs 20 , there are dodgy car dealers out there...

04 172 cup??

shouldnt that be a 182 then? :S

Some were left in March 2004, they built the last 200 in December 2003 (got me one of those!) but it took a little while for them all to be registered.

As long as you're careful there is no need to pay so much extra to buy from a main dealer imo, especially for one thats still under warranty etc. Find a good private car on here or even at an independent dealer, check out the history (if its a Cliosport members), get an RAC/AA check and an HPI check and you've still saved yourself £900.

  Turbos.
You don't get anywhere with Renault by asking in a polite manner, they'd rather just take advantage of you.

You have been ripped off, simple, why shouldn't they get an earful? If you let them get away with it what other poor sod or little old lady will get ripped off next..?

Can't believe you're even contemplating getting it sorted if Renault says no lol.

I have no intention of letting them get way with it either i will try the suttle aproach at first. I bought the car from a Renault Dealer who we bought our previous clio from and my father in law has had 3 cars from them as well. I will be calling them tommorow to see what they say I may even call in there and see the manager. I will keep you all posted.

I hear you, but I cant be arsed with private sales. I would rather chop in my old motor and get a new one I know the dealers charge a little more and I know could have save'd money.
