Brain Teaser!?!?

  Clio 182
Help!

My friend has recently purchased an MX5, it's a MKII 1.8 Icon, with 140bhp and a 6 speed Manual gearbox.

On paper it's a walkover.

But I cannot shift him.

I have a low mileage 182 FF with both cup packs and in a straight line there is really not much in it, I don't start to gain any ground until we reach serious license loosing jail time speeds. We haven't really explored corners yet as the car is new to him and he's still finding his feet but I feel it will probably be much of the same.

But the fact that I can't shift him on a straight section does worry and puzzle me, I know the clios are no straight line hero's but it's binned off a lot more "powerful" cars than his. I know we're around the same weight but he has a serious power deficit and is a whole second on the official 0-60 sprint slower.

Why can't I move him? Is there a chance I'm down on power or is that just the way it is seeing as he has a 6 speed box? It's a puzzle both of us can't get our heads around, and anybody we've spoke to about it.

As a comparison, I have had a little fun with a guy from work on the way home occasionally and he owns a clio 200, and we seem quite evenly matched, I'd go as far as to say my little 182 has the edge.

if anyone could shed some light on this it would be appreciated, apologies for the wordy post.

  dan's cast offs.
his penis is obviously bigger than yours, try stuffing some socks down your pants and see how that goes

Weight, gear ratios, different engine characteristics.

I'd be getting it on a dyno

Exactly this. It is prob a case of his is a strong engine and yours is down on power due to timing being out. Mine was down 20bhp according to fred as my cambelt was 180degrees out. I noticed the difference once i got it back from fred. Who did the cambelt change?

He's only .2l and 20ish bhp down on you. That's if his car is making book power.

lightened flywheel? Aucky's old mx5 had that alongside other mods and I had to work a bit harder than I anticipated to push him along. (Wasn't much in it up to 60)

but then again it's a 197, not a 182, so that may be unhelpful. Becaus we know the 197 is faster than the 182s.

I think you've got the wrong figure in your head there. As it wouldn't run if it was 180 degrees out.

Probably have fella. Fred said it was bad and couldn't work out how the engine hadn't gone bang. Definite difference once i had th car done.

Real world differences on the road are often small (but try against a Noble, flippin 'ell is all I can say!). IMO the Clio isn't an easy car to drive quickly as you need to be precise with revs and gear changes.

Yes mine too!! Mine was out apparently but made 181bhp a few times over the last few years and on 2 different rollers. Yet the ones that are timed "correctly" was in the low to mid 170's????

Pulls like a train though;) so it don't matter

drive it like its stolen see what its like then.

You may be lucky and have a freak of an engine. I feel mine is a weaker one but it still goes quite well. It has done some milage now though.lol. Has your timing been corrected now then?

Long story but no. It was never out lol !!!

My old 1.8 MX5 kept up with 182s on the NW meet I went to many years ago. That was a Mk1 so only meant to be 130hp.

I too had a 6 speed box, the ratios are so close you are always in the power band (6th is actually shorter than 5th in the 5 speed box). I also had a 4.3:1 final drive, meaning my top speed was about 124mph IIRC.

The 6 speed does make a difference, the 182 should pull away as speed increases I'd have thought but there won't be much in it at all (if anything as you've demonstrated).

Yeah that's exactly the way it is, my 182 is gaining ground just as it nears the end of 5th.
From what you boys have all said about timing I think I shall probably get it on a dyno as soon as possible, better to be safe than sorry and I love my motor so I don't wanna risk anything.

Thanks for the helpful replies, puts my mind at rest slightly that it should probably happen that way.

The end of 5th for who?

If you can get to the end of 5th in your 182 then I'd put money on your timing being just fine ;)

End of 5th for me, I mean in an end of 5th as in where it stops accelerating rather than the limiter.

Hmmm, how many leptons is that?

I'd have thought you'd start pulling away through 4th, but that's just a guess. Like I said, the MX5 when pedaled correctly didn't get left behind by 182s, but if you're doing a controlled comparison and they're fairly even yours could well be down on power (or as equally his could be up).

About 4.45 Million leptons.

Ill get it on a dyno and see. Cheers for the advice, let me know when your next gig is I'll make sure a ticket sells.

Timing you reckon? Wouldn't that be pretty noticeable?

Not if you haven't been in another 172/182 that is running correctly no. Don't get me wrong it is not worlds apart being 20-30hp down, but you will def notice it. The biggest difference was top end of 2nd into 3rd. Which in your circumstance would have gained on your mate.

Flol never gets old. Jail time that if caught.
