Brake Problems

now for some time, ive had a really annoying squeeking / squealing noise coming from i think the front drivers side brake / wheel on my car which goes away if i brake slightly or , if i steer to the left or right (cant remember which) it also goes....

today however, i have gained a much more worrying / serious ? noise...

i think its coming from the front left brake disc / wheel and its basically a constant clicking / scraping noise that slows when i slow and speeds up when i speed up..... sounds bit like a choo choo train ;) (in that its not a continous noise but on off on off on off very quickly)

if i brake from 60 to about 10 it turns into a groaning / loud scraping noise and if i brake completely to a stop and then pull away again, the noise gets really loud and sounds pretty worrying.

when i had a look at the disc in question (assuming thats what it is) it looks different to the other one;

it has / has kinda dark patches dotted around the surface which didnt use to be there... and arent on the other discs...

the centre of the disc which usually has a kinda rusty bit (rather like the edges look like) doesnt anymore almost like the pad is now closer to the centre of the disc than on the disc on the other side.....

both the front discs if you run your fingers over them do not feel smooth and u can feel undulations in them.......

is this a case of warped discs ???? or something else.....

i do use my brakes rather enthusiastically and have from time to time managed to use them to the point of quite serious fading and im guessing this is where the ptoblem may have arisen ????

any ideas folks ??

Doesnt sound to clever mate! Sounds like your caliper/pads are loose or you have a warped cracked disk. Get it to a brake specialist straight away before more damage results or your brakes possibly fail completely! From what you describe your disks are gooved and are in need of attention anyway.

oh no sorry to hear that dude. Your pads are probably totally worn out. Mine started to make graunching noises when they were low. On my 3rd set of pads now.

It mustve been that "800-yard" road works warning experience tother day.

How was Leicester?

im gonna get someone to have a look this afternoon / this evening as im not particulary happy with it as it is !!

yes... that might not have helped !!

leicester was cool.... good journey up, less good on way back as was feeling v rough !!!

got very drunk obviously !

i thought the same as you si, heavy braking in the outside lane was to much for them.;)

can you feel any vibration through the brake pedal? when i warped my discs you could really feel it.

hope you get it sorted mate.

rang my mechanic blokey i use and he said (when i said about the rusty bit in the middle now being shiny) new pads.

so i will try this and see how it goes.

yeah my scirocco ones made a graunching sound for ages and i left it too long - it needed new discs too....

hope you get it sorted asap

got bored but the wheel bearings probably naffed allowing it to cause overheating on the disc and scraping on the bell.

yes.... new pads fitted this evening while i stood and chatted to the bloke...

For a laugh, i rang renault and asked them how much it would be;

New front pads £40 ish ex VAT

1 1/2 Hours labour at £52.00 p/hour ex VAT

Hmm so about £140 then i asked... "yes, thats right"

"thankyou" i said smugly... goodbye

The guy i used did it in about half an hour and er... leys just say, it wasnt £140 !!!

The wheel that had the dodgy noise, the outer pad was donald ducked and the inner one wasnt quite so bad but on both sides they were pretty badly worn and it feels completely different now... obviously i havent "tested" them properly just yet but i could really feel the difference..... i guess maybe i should have got them done an incey bit sooner !!!

:D

yeh you should, that way you could have got even closer to the cone lorry.

glad you got them sorted, give them a while to bed in before you really test them though.
