Brake setup advice

  Clio 172 Cup
I pick my 172 Cup up on saturday and am planning to use it purely as a trackday car, it will not be going on the road. I need to change the discs and pads all round on it and want a temporary solution before i properly look at over hauling them later on this year. Having read some of the other posts this is the setup i am thinking of going with:

DS2500 Pads all round
Brembo Max on front and HC's on rear.

What do people think? Could i put normal pads on the rear? Am i better just to go with HC's all round for discs?

If it's temporary, surely just HC fronts with DS2500 pads? Good enough for many on here it seems.

I think a lot of people would also say the standard rear set up is fine for pretty hard track use - not much heat is generated there. Rear bearings are worth renewing on these and genuine from Renault are said to be best quality so many don't "uprate" rear discs.

Money saved can either be spent on new seal kit for an overhaul of the standard calipers - or towards whatever big brake setup you think you may get in future. I would just keep trying different front pads and working on brake cooling though, personally.

I run DS2500 all round, Brembo HC'S on the front and standard discs on the rear.

Wouldn't bother with the 2500's on the rear as there is simply no need, hardly any braking done at the rear.

My advice would be 2500's and Brembo HC's up front, fresh OEM pads and discs on the rear, more than man enough for track and road.

Thanks guys will go for brembo HC's and ds2500 up front and OEM discs and pads on rear, its only a tempary solution until i work out what i am doing long term.

Did you guys fit them yourselves or get specialist to do them?

It really is a DIY task for most. Little details make the difference though, eg the pads may need filing to correct size and/or you may choose to ditch the metal pad guides on the front calipers etc.

Go for Goodridge lines ;). On my cup i run;

DS2500 pads
Brembo HC's
Goodridge Braided lines
Motul RBF 660
Standard rears

This really is a fantastic set up imo, well recommended from me.

My personal opinion after having tried DS2500, they're an excellent choice for a dual purpose fast road/track day pad. You've said your car will purely be used as track car. For me, the choice is simple, Carbon Lorraine RC6. I got mine from K-Tec. Stunning stopping power no matter how much abuse you throw at them.

Braveheart what setup are you running on yours, Carbon Lorraine RC6 pads on front with Brembo discs and OEM discs and pads on rear?

As above, leave the rears well alone, my original rear discs/pads from the factory lasted 90k miles they do so little!

As for the front, as has been said, Brembo HC discs are enough, with whatever pad takes your fancy.

DS2500 can wilt, but CL, Pagid or PF pads tend to soak up the abuse.

Lines and a good fluid are pretty much essential too.

Discs for front and rear are ordered as are rear pads, just need to make my mind up on front pads, may have to get both and compare them. Cheers for the advice guys.

DS2500 are a good compromise but as you are only using it on track I would go for CL RC6 or Pagid RS4-4's but you will need to go for Brembo max discs with these as they will glaze over.

Also, beware of the extra brake dust!

Oh, and don't forget to help the brake temps by removing your front fogs and inner front arch liners. I went to the hassle of plumbing in ducting initially for a neat look but ended up ripping it out and just going "au naturel".

I have gone for DS3000 pads as they are a pure track/race pad. The DS2500 are a compromise as they are ment for road use too. I havn't yet tried them on the clio on track but used to use the 3000's on my old track car and they were fantastic. They can wear your discs quite quickly but if you want to stop hard and fast its probably a compromise that you have to make.

Given that your car will be track only as well it may be better to go for a pure track pad too. Depends how serious you want to take things I suppose. :p

Following this thread with interest. I'm Just about to order some Brembo HC discs for the front from George (G172) myself.

Might go with Mintex for my pads though if I get enough good feedback from them. If not DS2500s.

What's the best brake fluid then??? Never really seen a clear answer to this. Sure the OP will want to know this too.

I rarely use my car on road, mainly on track.

Up front: Brembo HC discs, RC5+ pads
Rear: Standard Renault discs, OE spec Ferodo pads (~£16)

ATE fluid, standard hoses.

Never any fade or change of pedal feel. Works fine from cold, when hot I only ever brake with the ball of my foot, there is plenty of power.

I have some sort of ducting setup, with fog lights and arch liners removed, and deflector plates. Spent a while trying to make ducting that went straight to the disc, but there just isn't enough space.

Edit: Which Mintex? I used some 1144s on a ~570kg car (albeit with small, solid discs) and didn't rate them, swapped to RC5+ and they are MUCH better.

Hoping to have a play with my new setup this weekend, I'm yet to get braided lines and fluid change yet though

Got Brembo hc front discs, CL RC5+ pads all round, new oem rear discs

How much are the DS2500s? The main price shown at the top of the page in that link is for front and rear, fronts are £117.

Think the ds's are around £126 ish. I only had a quick look at the link, noticed the price and left lol. So its £117 for the fronts?

Haha, yeah it's a bit misleading. Yep that's about what I paid. Kam racing and K-Tec have them too I think.

There is some chat about them falling off the backings, and my RC5s did just that, but I was assured by K-Tec that the bonding process changed for the 5+ compared with the 5s I had previously. I liked the performance so much I thought I would give them another try, and they seem to last ages.

Are your cl's responsive straight away Adam?

I'm finding that I have to get mine pretty hot for them to bite properly
