Just about to purchase myself a 172 cup. Problem is i didn't like my brakes on my old one (no abs). My question is whats the best brake setup that people have used to get the optimum out of there brakes? Money isn't really a issue but i want a very very good setup. Any advice would be great!

APs with proper bells and rotors, silicone fluid and braided lines. Rears can be uprated but more important get bias set-up how you like with a valve.

APs are a very serious set-up and prob not needed unless your a hero on the track, the clio is very light.

For ease of use Demon Tweeks can supply all parts, trader on here may do a better price tho.

thats a fast set up, probs wouldn't work well on the road, operating temperatures ect.

pagid fast pads & good discs (mine are drilled) on the front should do it, with goodrich hoses all round . change your brake fluid every 30k or so .thats what i've got/do nice bite and a firm pedal, no fade even on the track 8 laps or so.

yeah we (Yozzasport) do a fast road/track upgrade

Goodridge Lines
Brembo GrpN discs
choice of pads

all packages are sub £300!!

As stu8v said, pads are what will mainly govern operating temp, i ran 1144s and found them great for fast road and just swap for 1155s for track if overheating.

You get what you pay for and as he said money is not a problem, who wouldnt get APs???

A big waste of £600 if you ask me. The calipers warp when used and the pistons stick.
They are cheap for a reason.

You can ahve a set of 4 pot Willwoods from Mark @ Ritchspeed Imports for well under £500, uses the orignal 280mm 172 discs, or you can go bigger

on hard track applications i TOTALLY faded the brakes on my 182... and its got better pads...

so the only option is for me to goto 4pots and see how they get on...

need something to keep the heat out.... the wheels dont help though.... but they are staying.

Andy, have you got ducting? will make huge difference without the unsprung weight penalty.

RE my conversation with Hong Kong man, that could be linked to your driving style

fred.... oh we did sort it out.... but we both still faded them....

paul, got ducts there and has helped at little...

lots of weight and not a lot of air via the wheels.

As for the mounting kit any good engineering firm would knock one up easily.
I'm lucky and have all the machining equipment, lathe, milling machine etc. What people must remember is if used very hard such as on track you need to go bigger.
The number of pots a caliper has isnt the be all of brakes, by fitting 4 pots to std size discs you will not gain much as the heat build up will still be similar, you will gain slightly due to most 4 pots being an aluminium alloy construction though.
I would suggest something like Porsche brembos (huge) and 315 x 28mm discs IMHO this is a bullet proof setup.
