Brake Upgrade

  2002 Clio Dynamic

I have a 2002 1.4 Dynamic and im looking to get better brakes to sit behind my 18s,was thinking about swapping the standard efforts for 172 brakes-is this a hard conversion to do,cand the rear drums be converted to discs from the 172 as well??

That upgrade is only for a mrk1 clio!

Soz should have said mines was a mrk3 facelift!

Swopping to disks at the back from the 172 is fine apparenty. How the ABS etc will deal with it Im not sure but Ive heard of a new shape Clio with no probelems just sticking the rear axles on there but it wont be cheap.

As for front disks well apart from the k-tec ones your stuck you could replace the whole front but the cost would be stupid.

I thought up until 96 it was a mrk1 then up until 98 it was a mrk2 and from 98 on it was a mrk3 and then mrk3 facelift

Had probs ordering a strut brace and thats what years and models were used for them!

common misconception mate, your not alone

91-93 Mk 1 Phase 1
94-95 Mk 1 Phase 2
96-98 Mk 1 Phase 3
98-01 Mk 2 Phase 1
02> Mk 2 Phase 2
im probably out a little bit on the dates but thats vaguely how it goes...

No it aint! Hence its in the Mk2 Section of their website;)

Ive got Hi Spec Billet 4 Calipers on 325mm disk on my Vauxhall VX220 Turbo, they look fantastic, perform great and Hi Spec are a good outfit to deal with.

What Jeff at Hi Spec doesnt know about brakes, isnt worth knowing.

I had the hi-spec 4 pot kit and it didnt fit properly - if you look at: http://www.mcmillan-uk.com/clio/hispec001.jpghttp://www.mcmillan-uk.com/clio/hispec001.jpg you can see that the pads were overhanging the discs by quite a bit. Jeff at Hi-spec was very helpful when I was ordering the kit, but as soon as he had the money he didnt give a sh*t about the fact bits were missing (bolts) or that it didnt fit properly. In the end I had to go through trading standards and Visa to get my money back - I would NOT recommend them!

In the end I went for the K-tec big brake kit as MK3COL suggests above and this has made a huge difference to the braking performance.

About the big brake stuff on K-Tec,at the bottom of the page it just says for mrk1 clios with the different engine sizes!

Been f**ked about with ordering stuff for my clios and its all been for mrk1s,got a garage full of sh*t ill never use-so if it dont say mrk2 or the year then i just take it to be its for earlier models!

Mate it lists ur car Mk2 1.4 16v and Craig M has them so they are obviously the right ones!

I have just ordered Brembo Discs and EBC Green Stuff pads and the discs are for the 1.6 16v and the Pads for 90> Clios/Meganes/19s etc but they ARE the right ones-they dont list the 1.2 16v. Investigate and youll probably find out theirs plenty available to fit even if they aint listed!

Has

  RS 182 - Black Gold

1.2 1.4 1.6 16v all use williams/valver discs and R5 GTT pads as far as i know, no need to upgrade them IMO

Im going for the 4 pot 285mm kit (with braided hoses) from k-tec which are made by hispec. Ill let you know how it goes..

Ill be looking into an axle swap shortly for the rear but i know you can get conversions done which would be cheaper.

I would say the OE brakes are fine for general use but my 1.2 is going on a track day once a month so single piston calipers just dont cut it.

Dont you find the OE brakes good enough? My dad has just ordered a turbo and were taking it to Castle Combe pretty much straight after he gets it. Ive driven elises and the brakes never seemed too bad, if not extraordinary..

Huh? No the 285mm disc conversion goes on your car too.

Not really wanting to upgrade the brakes for the performance, just for the look, standard ones look daft sitting behind a set of 18s! thats all!
