Brakes for standard ph2 172 on track

  Ph2 172
I'm looking at doing a novice track day at Snetterton in November in my totally standard 172.

I'm fairly sure the standard brakes won't cut track use but I'm not sure how far I need to go with them, I don't want to spend loads, but I don't want to make any silly compromises either. I need to change my brake fluid anyway, so now is a good time to look at doing them.

Could anyone give me any suggestions? The cheaper the better, lol! ;)

I used my standard brake set up @ Spa last year and they were spot on
No brake fade at-all

I have my bits now for my upgrade
will be doing

BFGoodrich stainless hoses
Ferodo DS2500 front pads
5.1 fluid
New standard rear discs and pads

so this should be better and reliable for peace of mind on the track
but still for standard brakes on the clio they are quite good

I might be up at snetterton in nov might see you up there

Good to know that the standard setup isn't too bad I guess, although I'd feel a lot happier putting something a bit better on tbh!

I was thinking of upgrading the pads on the front and leaving the standard discs in place, I've been looking at the Ferodo DS2500's myself, as well as the Carbone Lorraine's and EBC's YellowStuff. How do these pads compare and are they all good for day to day use on the road?

My rear pads are currently about 60% through, so will probably do these as a matter of course - I'm guessing just standard items will be fine on the back?

As I've got to get the fluid changed anyway, I guess I may as well get some decent hoses fitted at the same time. Never really looked at doing this before so not really sure what I'm looking for, any of these any good?

This track day is going to cost a fortune, but at least it gives me a chance to get a few things sorted on the car :)

  Audi S3 & 172 Cup
I did my first track day in my 172 Cup a few weeks ago and although I can't comment on how the standard factory set up would have coped, I upgraded with the K-tec kit consisting of brembo HC front discs, s/s lines and ferrodo front pads. Left the rears completely standard. There are no other words to describe the braking performance other than simple awesome. Absolutely no fade whatsoever and I was out-braking every single car on the track with the exception of one Lotus Exige.......or maybe that was because I was being too aggressive......whatever, I highly recommend that set up!

Hey Seb, nice colour 172 to start with and another member from EA!

Ill also be going to Snet for the first time, but not until next year now, DannyR will be organizing a CS group buy there so should be great fun! Keep your eyes peeled for that in the new year :)

Anyway...this is what im going to be running when I hit track next year:

Ferodo DS2500 front pads
HC front discs
EBC Red stuff rear pads
Genuine Renault rear discs
5.1 Fluid
Goodridge braided lines

Going in DannyR's car with DS2500's I can say they are preaty awesome over standards, I wouldnt not normally spend £100+ on pads but his have lasted quite a few track days now, so for the performance they give, im happy to spend the money.

Hi mate, good to see there's some local's around :approve: That's actually my old 172 from a couple of years a go, bit of a long story about that one, but lets just say it wasn't the best car I've ever owned! Fortunately it didn't put me off for good and I now own a silver ph2. Of the two colours, I have to say I do prefer the black, but this is a good one so I'm happy enough :)

Think I'm pretty much going to go with the general recommendation's and get;

Ferodo DS2500 front's
Brembo HC discs (if the current discs are getting low)
Standard rear pads / redstuff if price isn't much different
Leave the existing rear discs
AP Racing 5.1 fluid
Goodridge S/S braided hoses

I'm guessing that'll work out at around the £500 mark fully fitted, so it better rip my eyes out of their sockets when I stamp on the pedal, lol!

I'll keep my eye out for that group day next year, at least that gives me a few months to brush up on my driving ;)

Im only using Red stuff rears as the Renault OE was about £35 and Red stuff was the same.

Lol it will probably be my first track day, so everyone will no doubt be flying past me :)
