Brakes

  S2000
When I was working on the 16v recently I noticed that the brake discs were only clearing up on one side. The outside of the disc was clear of all rust etc but the inside only had a strip about 1cm wide all round where it had cleared.

I've not really had a chance to drive the car yet but just wondered what the likely problem is and how I would go about fixing it. I don't know much about how the calipers work in great detail so a quick explanation of what needs done would be great.

Thanks.

Sounds like the slider are stuck.
Thee two bolts holding the calipers to that bracket thingie slider in and out on two pin likt things there covered by bits of rubber there the bits you stick the spanners on to undo the caliper. If they don't slider then you get this problem.
It can be a pain to do you need to try and make them move pull them out of you can and grease them up. Have a fiddle with them and they should come loose though.

For the sliders can I just use any sort of general purpose grease?

Also do I just undo the two bolts just behind the bits of rubber on the caliper? As I say I haven't done much with ragards brakes before, apart from removing the calipers and discs for other jobs, so I'm not sure of whats what.

Unbolt the caliper . Usually you need a 13mm spanner and a 17mm spanner , check that the slider is not rusty , if it is , clean it up with some emery cloth and regrease it .

Check the rubber seals/gaiters for splits etc as this could be letting dirt etc get in onto the slider.

Cheers Mr Billy, thats what I though it was but I wasn't totally sure.

Big-Yin - Yeah I've got a haynes, but I don't know where it is just now as I have bothered to use it for the last few jobs I've had to do.
