I also have a 1.6 16v with rear drums and want discs. I know it will make next to no difference to braking etc but I just wana do it. Looking at some of these threads it seems as if I could just buy a rear axle, have it fitted and all would be good, but what I want to know is, will it cause problems with my ABS? I remember Giles having problems with his 1.6 and ended up not bothering with the conversion as it was too much hassle? Something to do with rings and teeth lol.
The rear axle wil eyp just fit chnage the handbrakes cable as well.
the abs is the issue as Giles discovered his options are the the same
1) get new abs rings made up with the same number of teeth as the drums had (any enginnering place cold do it)
2) Get a true electrical expert to rewire the abs system (not going to happen)
3) swop to a 172 abs system or 1.6 which had rear disks etc and check front abs rings are the same tteh number as you have although I don't recon that will happen
4) this is the most promising someoen else has done this find out how many teeth you need 32 rings a bell when i counted them and find a front abs ring off a driveshaft with the smae nuymber and use that on the rear disk. someone else has done this before do a search but I think they found a normal abs ring has the correct number of teeth.
5) Bin the abs.,
