Braking Problem 172

I drove the 172 today for the first time a month or so. I noticed that when progressively braking, I can feel feedback through the pedal (and even hear) a clunking grating noise. - but it isn't all the time.
On heavy braking after giving it some, they seem fine, still responsive. I doubt they are warped, there is no juddering or consistant wobbling or feedback through the pedal. its more of a mechanical clunking/grating. Could it be something to do with the ABS?
The car is an 03 plate, driven by two women and covered 48k.

Im getting exactly the same problem. Been back to the dealers and they found no problem. I have been told abs ring cracked is a common problem with these but thats not the problem with mine. Maybe loose callipers or something...

occurring more frequently now. Has anyone any ideas what to check? I'll have a look at the calipers tonight.
