brembo shimming/milling

i really need someone to help me out here with this.

I've been quoted £100 to knock back 5mm off the mounting points, plus they say the calipers will get marked as they will have to be clamped.

I've bought them new so i don't want them scratched or marked. if i did then id have gone for used set.

who here has had a decent job done and where? anybody?

Post some details on what needs doing and I'll see if I can help.

I'm assuming they are suggesting due to the odd shape clamping will mark the Caliper

thanks. need this doing, two on each, i don't mind paying some postage as long as somebody can guarantee they will look after them and not scuff them up,

he didn't seem that arsed that I've paid top dollar for brand spankers, said he can 'maybe' put some paper in to help it out, 'no thanks mate ill go elsewhere

It'll have to be clamped across the cylinders on both sides.
And something will have to be put in between ( where the disc goes) to stop deformation.
Could be clamped with some not too hard wood or something.
Although putting pressure on a powdercoat is always a risk.

i can't at the min my phones dead and chargers at work. the only image i can get you is of mine though without this milling is that any good?

yeah i thought maybe thick rags or some sort of towel

I think looking at the very odd shape it was probably a good shout by the engineering company saying beware we may damage powdering coating.

they are going to need to be secured some how

what is the width of them - red arrow below?
also as circled in blue, that's a bit of a fooker for putting in a vice

I'll do it for £95

But due to the nature of what needs doing, it will be difficult to not mark them.

I'd suggest clamping them straight to a machine bed on top of a bit of nylon or something to avoid markings much as possible

Manchester as well.

Seriously though, for you end up stuck for help, let me know and I'll see what I can do for you.

I can't promise anything at the moment, but if you're stuck, let me know

subject to their width I could put them on my manual mill and do em. think my vice on the manual opens to 120-150mm

but as everyone is saying marking is possible

  dan's cast offs.
if someone couldn't mount them for machining without marking them then i wouldn't trust them to machine them, it's not rocket science!!

I would use a large block of cheddar cheese, whittled down using my razor sharp wit to create a fixture. I would then mount 3 segments of mini Toblerone in a collet and mill the faces using almond milk as coolant.

Alternatively, use thin wood packers and t nut the hell out of it with a couple of straps over the top. - direct to the table as suggested above

i did the milling today in one caliper at the moment for the 280mm disc fitment. I think everything went well.

Some masking to protect the caliper

Holding them down. i decided to hold the down like that and not across the pistons to eliminate any deformation / damage to the caliper

Clocked to make sure that is even

  Hi comp phase 1
Nice one for posting . Easy enough job for any machinest ?

is not a hard job. The hardest bit is to set and make sure that the caliper sits square. it took me an hour to do one caliper.

Small update. as i have access in a work shop here where i work i had the change today to make 4 spacers for the calipers. These spacers replacing the 5 mm that i had to machine out from the calipers. Picture with the spacers on the calipers will follow.

hi mate, are these 197 calipers? or 406?
also is your objective to fit with 15" rims or 16"?
Chris Powell made his own brackets to fit 197/200/225/230 Brembo callipers with 280mm discs and 300mm discs, the former needing 5mm milled from the brackets in order to fit under some 15in wheels.

Forgive me if I am being stupid.

So the calipers shouldn't need touched?

Just use brackets if using 300mm discs and if using 280mm discs mill 5mm from the bracket?

Also is there any difference between the 197 and 406 calipers? It's the 406 ones I will be getting you see?

Also does anyone know if the braided lines are the same for the 406 and the 197? Obviously pure Motorsport sell 197 lines but I can't find any info to see if 406 lines are the same.

Cheers

If you are using 280mm discs obviously you will need the 280mm brackets and you will need to machine 5mm from the caliper bracket mounting phase as you see from the pictures above.

Ok.

No 406 calipers are not the same as 197 calipers the brackets for 406 ones come from motex proformance only in 300mm disc size so only fit under 16s.

The brake lines for 406 calipers again are not the same as 197 they are the same as 172 so you dont need to purchace lines tbh.

Ive ad both sets so i can help if you need

406 calipers under 16 inch alloys 300mm discs 16mm spacers there is no bracket for 15 inch alloys

I would also add that the 300mm discs scrape the caliper unless you dremel part of the caliper. Easier way round it is to try and get 295mm discs.
