Broken GearBox on MK2 172

Was leaving Washington on the A1 on Sunday afternoon to make my way back south and was coming up too Durham Services and my gearbox just went bang!

Had too be picked up by the AA and driven the rest of the way(300 miles), on a back of a AA relay truck.

Not fun, and upset as i have to have a new gearbox. Its under warrebty and i'm still waiting to hear back from the garage down here in Basingstoke, fun!

ANyone else had problems with there gear box on a 172??

I recently had synchro problems with 3rd. My car is 4 years old now but only 20K miles and dealer-serviced. Renault UK paid 80% of the replacement cost.

same as above i had issues engaging 3rd gear at pace, this was synchro probs. This was on an almost 3 year old just under warenty - this was covered 100% through warranty

I had problems with third also; I ended up getting a complete new box after 26k.

They tried to blame to problem on clutch wear but they soon decided the clutch was fine and new box was put in!

That was ~1k of work, so I was very glad of warranty!!

Apparently the gearboxes are a weak point of the 172s.

im on my 4th 172 gearbox touch wood this one will be ok
