Burpspeed Version 2: Race Car Build

  182cup & 172 racecar
Done.
Well except corner weighting, but we are going to attempt this at the circuit on Monday.

Took Burp3 out into the bright sunlight today, for a little trip down the road to Back'n'Rounds. The lads stuck it on the Hunter alignment to check the readings, and straightened my steering wheel for me.

Happy days :)

How did today go Tony? burp3 all good?

Burp3 is fine.
This one still wants to kill me when cold lol, and had a few tank slapper moments (sorry Jay), one coming out of Copse, that was fun in 4th!!
He ran faultlessly all day, just needed to put a new tps plug on, as the old one fell apart. Thumbs up to Anthony for the corner weighting, but we were only a couple of turns out from good anyway.

So all in all, a good day.

Spanner check and a wash, dust cover on and he's ready for Snett. :)

Oh yes, but it would have to be rear or four wheel drive, I'm sure I'd crash a fwd car on th e 1st stage (unless tarmac of course).
That Escort went over 3x in the air before it landed on one corner, then went end over end 3x. I was flat out in 3rd at the time and leading the day against some much bigger and expensive machinery.

I've still got the steering wheel somewhere, it's very bent from where I didn't let go lol.

Yes, the prevailing feeling towards the stages is still very much rear or four wheel drive. A competitive RWD car can really be big money though. It's one area where I think racing is much better organised. The class system in rallying really does mean that money talks. At least in circuit racing there is something for all budgets.

I must say, I quite enjoy a front driver. A challenge to get the best from it. But I grew up watching the F2 era, so I'm probably a little biased. The problem is, I've got the licence, overalls, lid etc, but haven't got as far as doing an event yet because the car is in bits! Real life always seems to get in the way lol. This year hopefully...

Latest update, seeming as it's been a while, and I've been mega busy.
The reshell went as planned, as did the test day at Silverstone. So holiday off we went.
Arriving back the day before race day, is pushing it a little bit fine, but we got to windy wet snetterton with no bother.
Quali, was a little damp, and being a mixed grid, I was happy with 7th overall.
Somehow I missed the call for race 1, and didnt get to the holding area on time, and was promptly waved up the pit lane.
There I had to sit whilst everybody else did 2 green flag laps, this was because it had chucked it down, and there was rivers across the circuit, not fair really, as I wouldn't know where they were!!
Off everybody goes, and I'm sat there like a lemon until all the cars had already go around the first corner, this is going to be fun, so lights on full blast, and away we go.
Soon caught up with the backmarkers, and started to make my way through the grid, until, Safety car boards came out, b****cks! The marshall's are quick at Snett, as is the safety car (he doesn't hang about lol), right we are back on it, then the end. 14th overall wasn't bad seeming that I was so far back, so pleased with that really, it just meant being stuck in the middle of the pack race 2.

Race 2
Good get away, and squeeze through a couple of squabbling cars in front (mind my new paint work!)
I had decided to stay on my wets, as I wasn't convinced it was dry enough for the Dunlops, others changed theirs. Now after about 4 laps, a dry line was starting to appear, oops, but driving off line was doing me ok, esp as I was still passing people.
Up ahead (a long way ahead), I could see the two leading French cars Don and Carl, I had no chance of catching them, and nobody behind,, so eased off slightly, as my job was done, or so I thought.
2 laps left and cruising, went through Hamilton and, BANG and big smoke! Thats me, fk.

Turns out a valve had snapped, and what a mess it made. The cams survived and will be for sale soon.

I have sourced a new engine ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££, and a big thanks to James Ashton for helping me get it in the car.
So now we are all up and running, just going for mapping at Northampton Motorsport on Thursday, then straight to Silverstone for the next race on the 23/24th April.
Lets see how that goes. I'm broke now lol.

Burp all ready for the off for mapping.

:)

Heard good things about them, one of my good mates has had both his high comp f4r mapped there and his forged mi16 pug, excellent results from both.

Angle grinder is more suitable.

Anyway, a brief spec of new engine

  • 172 Ph1 block with good crank (Early ph1 cranks are the better of them)
  • 172 Ph1 head extensively ported by Neil Roper complete with uprated valve springs, Supertech valves and new valve guides
  • Block machined for correct bore clearances and to get correct compression ratio
  • Cylinder head cam journals line bored to ensure optimum clearances for cams to avoid excessive oil pressure loss through incorrect tolerances.
  • Block crank journals line bored for optimum clearances and then machined to run tagged main bearings.
  • Fully balanced bottom end assembly
  • Saenz Con rods with tagged King race bearings and L19 rod bolts
  • 83mm High compression pistons
  • Modified oil pump to achieve optimum oil pressure and durability
  • Baffled sump to eliminate risk of oil surge through long duration corners on sticky tyres.
  • Cat cams 421 non VVT cams
  • Modified head to blank the VVT to ensure no oil pressure drop
  • Full billet lightweight pullies
  • All assembled with new Renault seals, gaskets, waterpump etc
