19th August 2011 - Brakes
A prep day in the workshop today and as usual we had a job list written on the cupboard door to work through.
When we fitted a new set of pads at Anglesey we noticed one of the caliper dust seals had split and been baked hard by all the heat. It was a good time to do a full rebuild on the calipers. A quite simple job removing the pistons and cleaning everything up then replacing the o’rings and seals. The pads were cleaned up and a litre of new 5.1 fluid bled through.
We also made up some new brake cooling duct deflectors as the flimsy ones we had before had finaly crumbled away. they were made from left over bits of heat shield. Some slightly more rigid ones were made out of tin and them carefully trimmed down once on the car so they didnt catch on anything. Quite pleased with how they came out. tested them with the leaf blower when we had finished them.
Other jobs included an oil change and spanner check. We also had another bash at trying to make the pit limiter work reliably. When it works its brilliant but we cant rely on it. It worked for half the test at Anglesey perfectly and then decided to work when it wanted to. We didnt use it in the race as a pit lane speeding penalty would of ruined the race. Its down to the speed signal dropping out. weve reduced the number of pick up teeth on the trigger wheel and will see how it goes at Mallory.
Every thing went well today. Only had a very minor problem with a snapped bolt but other than that a pretty good, productive and organised day.
