Buyer pulls out, what to do

  182 FF
The buyer of my cup has been in touch, well his gf has, she explained he has just been made redundant and can not go through with the purchase.

He left me a 200 quid deposit, had to sit on the car a week missing out on potential buyers.

Do I give him his deposit back, keep some or all

Suggestions appriciated:approve:

give him 100 back, tell him how much it has inconvenienced you + Cost of relisting of auto trader etc. In fact keep it all.

Given the circumstances if you can verify he's telling the truth I would give it back. However if they are messing you about and have just changed thier mind I would keep it.

Depends how sorry you feel for him, either A. Give it all back, B. Give half it back or C. Give him sweet FA back.

I dunno one side of me says keep it, but the other say give it back. £200 will make alot more difference to the guy than it will to you. I am talking from experience being made redundant a few weeks ago, £200 could give the guy a few weeks shopping money.

Karma.....

This is the dilemma i am in.

Seemed a genuine guy, was only waitin 4 a transfer of funds, he even rang me up this mornin to advise he'd collect tomorrow night, his g/f said he's a carpet fitter, so could understand the him bein made redundant.

I'm an honest guy, wouldn't wanna kick him while he's down, had a load of interest though and had to turn em all away:S

The fact his Mrs rang you makes me think the guy is some sort of fairy and has changed his mind. Or she has put her foot down and said he ain't buying it.

Bloke: Luv, i've bought a new car....

Wife: WHAT?! We need a holiday, we need a house, do you know how much those things cost to run??

Bloke: Its too late, i've put a deposit on it....

Wife: Well you'd better get it back. We can't afford it.

Bloke: I'm not doing that, you want the money back, you call him!!

Wife: Ring ring, ring ring, Hello, is that joe81??

I'd keep it on that basis alone.

Good point tbh iirc. He should have manned up and phoned himself, keep the pussies money.

If you've had a lot of interest and he has been made redundant then I'd give it all back; chances are you'll get another buyer soon enough. Unless you need the money it's the kind thing to do, you won't be any worse off for it, but he'll appreciate it. :)

Selling cars is a total nightmare anyway, you've just got to take it as it comes. If he's been seemingly genuine all the way through, I'd give it back to him.

I'm after a Cup by the way. No need to ask you questions, as the advert sort of tells all! Erm.... how long have you owned the car?

just give it back. you will sell that car and you'll be a better person for it.

I hope i sell it,although i was gutted when I had sold her, seemed a fair price for her

I am a big believer of goes round comes round, but by the same token I need to be clear he ain't just got cold feet and trying to get out of this

My main reason for selling was to clear some debt, i work for a company that sells data intelligence to the automotive industry and wanted to be sure I had no burdens if i ever came unstuck.

Owned the car for six months before that it belonged to my best friend for three years, belts all done by renault specialist, Matt at Accrington.

I'm feelin very mixed up about this, never been in this position, but i know i'll feel like an arse if i kept it

give it a couple days. If he DOESNT ask for it back then i would give him it back, but minus the cost of re-advertising.

If he asked for it back then i would be more suspicous of it being a wind up.

but thats just me.

At the end of the day, if the guy is actually genuine, then i would not want the bloke to be out £200 for nothing.

Did she even inquire about returning the deposit? If he was made redundant, surely they would have at least asked to see if you wuld return it as a good will gesture.

I'd say give half back if you feel bad unless you can be 100% sure he's redundant, then maybe give him the full amount. I'd feel pissed off to give any back if he couldn't find the time to ring you personally though.

She just said 'i don't know what you want to do about the deposit'

to which I replied, I need to speak to him and come to an agreement, i advised perhaps if he can't speak he could email me, heard nothing back yet:S

re-advertise and tell them, that its costed certain amount, due to their commintments, so will give the rest back ?

should have kept the car for sale, until he had picked it up and transfered money over tbh :)

Perhaps, but i take people on face value, and I didn't want a lot of calls and me having to fob them off untill i recieved the money, that just messes people around.

Sounds a bit odd. Surely if he was redundant they'd ask to at least go evens about it.

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Exactly, but he didn't speak to me and I felt a bit funny talkin to the mrs about it.

Wait for him to contact you personally. You've tried and he hasn't got back to yet so obviously its not that important to him.

it would be awkward but this is probably what i'd try: talk to him and ask if he'd mind telling you his employer's name; find/verify said employer's contact details, ring them, explain and ask if they'd mind confirming that he was informed of redundancy yesterday (or whatever).

if it's genuine, that doesn't sound unreasonable and i reckon they'd probably only be too happy to help by confirming that he was employed there and has been made redundant = refund.

if he doesn't want to give you a number (or gives you his brother's number, etc), he's taking the p*ss = keep the money.

as said, bit awkward but that's not your fault and i reckon you should be able to ask that kind of thing without appearing too disrespectful.

Why bother to take a deposit in the first place if you give it back when they change their mind defeats the object. Im a cnut though with no morals though.
The honest thing to do would be to give him it back minus the listing fee given the circumstances.

This is what i love about clio sport the- the clartiy you all bring to a moral dilemma:rasp:

If I had put a deposit down on a car then it would mean I was serious about it. You don't hear of many ppl going around doing that then changing their minds and trying to get it back, sure ppl pissing you about but most don't go that far...

If I had to pull out after leaving a deposit I wouldn't even mention it as I beleive its my problem but would be happy if the seller said you can have it back.

Personally I think I would keep part of it for the costs associated and give an element back esp if they are in financial difficulty I would just feel like a prick if I didn't.

It is a bit odd getting his missus to ring up though, I would deff speak to him before I did anything either via email or phone call and like someone said if they were desperate for money surley they would ask for it back.

Once the cars sold, work out how much extra you had to pay on trader etc, give the rest back. Your not out of pocket, he's paid what he owes.

  180.6Bhp 172 cup (cc)
use some of it for putting back on autotrader etc then go on the piss with the rest of it?

Nah! :D Tell him you will hold the rest until you sale the motor. then if you got to knock 100 nuts off of the sale to get rid of it deduct that
