Car  corsa ecoflex
Ok so im going to look at a 172 tomorrow and wanted to know what to look for..its an 01 model with fsh and its done 80k the guy want £2.5k for it..ive seen it from the roadside and it looks very clean..but i just wanted you guys advice as it will be my first 172
cheers
Ivan

If the Cam & Aux belt ain't been changed then it's well overdue. Get it changed straight away otherwise you're looking at a lot of money for quite literally a new engine if it goes.

May aswell get the water pump changed while they are at it as well.

Sounds good that:)

DO IT!!!
The only thing you will regret is not getting a 172 cup, 182, 182 cup or Trophy..
but thats not a bad thing, i had a 200bhp 182ff but still wanted a 172 cup, now i got a Trophy so im happy.
Like i said just DO IT, NOW!!

^If it's a Mk1 172 then I wouldn't say that's even a regret. I would've only changed my 172 for a Vee or perhaps a Trophy.

£2.5k for that sounds very cheap. Bargain if it's all as it sounds.

What a dissapointment the car turned out to be,it need loads doing to it..new front screen, all 4 alloys badly kerbed and the tracking was way out..so that was my main concern as it was a cat c insurance job that had been repaired, wing mirrors scratched and a huge boy racer exhaust..so i used my head and not my heart and walked away..so im on the hunt again..i did see one but although it had full documented service history it had done 101k so i thought best not

Definitely best not mate! I thought 2.5k for that spec seemed rather too generous.

I was so gutted as i really thought i would today be the proud owner of a 172 but i was not to be...where else other than pistonheads, autotrader and of course here is there to look online

Well done for walking away mate, it's very easy to get caught up in the thought that you are buying a car before you've viewed it and end up with something you regret.

You'll probably see plenty of lemons if you're on a tighter budget, but keep looking. I'd say your best bet for picking up a bargain is keep looking on here. This forum tends to WAY undervalue the Cliosports, so you can normally get a good car cheaper than it would be on Pistonheads or AT, etc...

Im not to clued up on insurance so could someone explain to me what cat a,b,c,d means at all..sorry to be a pain but ive seen another 172 at £3200 and it says it was a cat d..im confused..do i buy or do i keep away

Don't limit yourself to cars in your area matey, if you want a decent one then be prepared to travel. The cost of a train ticket isn't much in the grand scheme of things.

That Exclusive looks good, getting pretty rare now too. An yeah, the Exclusive was a limited run in Scarab Green - a Mk1 172 with different alloys and full cream leather interior. Look fantastic in the flesh IMO.

As for the Cat D, C, B and A - they all mean that the cars have suffered different levels of damage, been written off and then repaired. D is the least significant damage, A is the worst.

In my own opinion, I'd never buy anything that's been written off, you never know what might go wrong and it'll always affect resale value.

Cat d is damaged but repairable, just ins co not prepared to do it at their cost, cat c is worse, requiring inspection on completion of works, probably best avoided, Cat d is no problem if you have all the info of the accident, but you pay "significantly" less than for a normal example of the same condition.

Cat b is parts only and cat a is crusher.

Cheers for that what i really need to do is to pay my membership and have a look at the buying guide if you have one...that way i can see what to look for and what cars to avoid

Balls!!! He sold it already..well the hunt continues and i will keep you all updated, thanks for all the advice now i really must pay my membership:) :)

I have widened the search and have seen a few possibilities..thing is im on a budget so im limited in what i can get really...but fingers crossed i could have one by the end of the week..Ive just done a insurance quote and the lowest was £395 f/c:)

TBH i would rather buy a Cat C than a Cat D....

Cat C has to be checked by VOSA to go back on the road... Cat D dont!

TBH it also comes to down to the garage doing the repairs, and the insurance bloke who class's it a cat C or D.

If the shell is Bent, or had a servere knock it should be Cat B/C

If it is just cosmetic it should be cat D but often a Cat C due to Cost and easy way of Insurance company's telling people oh the Car is a Cat C and would not be worth Repairing...

Its always best the have a full report of damage, Repair work, Photo's are great etc etc...

I have My Photo's of my car through various stages of repair, Pictures of the Car on Jig, Proof of the level of Damage, Proof of new parts (Invoice and Pictures), fresh MOT etc etc...

Only thing i dont have is Past History, although i am hoping the old Owner replies to my letter i sent him asking whether he had the document etc.

Ivan, Keeping looking....

PS: Shopboy from RTOC

cheers chris i will bear all that in mind...I took one for a test drive today and it blew my socks off...it was a 2003 172 that had been slightly modified and although it was way over my budget at £4600 it was a cracking car...I can honestly say ive caught the 172 habit and need more of it soon..God i wish it was thursday as then i would be looking through the autotrader plotting my next move

just wait for the right one mate, i spent about 4 months looking at them, thought really hard about a couple that needed a few bits and bobs done but in the end got a 100% mint 2003 with 20k on the clock, 1 owner etc

just keep an eye on the exhausts, mine had had the backbox replaced when i got it but the welds in the centre section went :(

I know the best thing is to wait but at the mo im like a kid waiting for christmas...still i do have my little mk1 clio turbo to play with for the time being
