Buying a 182...

  Black Gold 182...
Hi there,

Sorry if this question has been posted many times before, but what "problems" should i look for when buying a 182? Gonna go for a Black Gold with both cup packs, an 05 or 55 plate in the next couple of weeks.

thanks

Make sure it has an engine. Seriously, no joke. I was told about this bloke that bought a car, drove it home and then realised it had no engine! Nightmare.

Hey, wait a minute......never mind.

I always check for oil leaks. A 55 plate cup I looked at had oil dripping underneath. Could have been where they spilt it when topping it up but I wasn't sure so walked away.
Check the engine and bonnet, make sure it looks nice and not like it has blown oil everywhere.
Check gaps around doors and panels to see if they are equal incase its a cat D.
Check tyre levels, if it needs new ones then they are going to cost you £80 - £100 fitted each.
Listen for rattles esp under acceleration. Might be nothing but could be a worn exhaust/cat
Basically its just a car at the end of the day and treat it like any other.
Check paintwork, interior, service history etc. I don't think there is anything major that goes wrong, just niggly faults.
If its under 3 years old then you are still going to have some warrenty left as well.

Thanks for the replies, yeah was a bit concerned about black and maintenance involved, but i do tend to enjoy looking after my cars so it shouldn't be a problem, i hope :)

GR1314, thanks for the reply, yeah i'm going for one with warrenty, so that if anything does go wrong i can get it sorted on Renault. Does anyone know how much extended warrenties are from Renault...?

Tyres shouldn't be a problem at £80-100, selling my A2 at the moment were tyres cost £120 each...! This is because only one manufacturer (Pirelli) make the tryes in the size required and they are only 185's on 16's, can't remember the profile size...

thanks

ha ha yeah the rattles have been a concern, but i'm willing to look past these "niggles?" for the power... Just got a bit sick of the A2's slow pace... I'll just have to see how i get on with the clio, i reckon we'll be ok :)

  Black/Gold 182
Rattles aside (touch wood) I've had no major problems with mine (had it from new). A few minor niggles and the dealers are complete monkeys, but car itself has been fine. Fast, fairly frugal, and lots of toys.

My main dislikes are:

1. Paint seems to mark easily (lots of swirls in my Black/Gold)
2. Rattles from dash
3. Motorway ride is harsh
4. Not much boot space.

Although not the fault of the car, I'd also be happy never to have to deal with a Renault dealer again.

Is it all worth it though? and at the end of the day will i be as happy with the car as i think i will be...? What i want is a great looking car that is quick and practical to use everyday. And that isn't going to cost the earth to run....

Your the only person who can answer that see if you can take one for a long test drive.

There cheap to run but its all relitive to what they are ie a hot hatch.

I'll be buying off a private owner, so unfortunatly a long test drive will probably be out of the question, so i'll just have to see how we get on when i get one... i owned an S3 for 3 and half years which was very enjoyable and one of the things that attracted me to the 182 was the similar power to weight ratio, it's just the build quality that's a "slight" concern, but hey you can't have everything...

i am really looking forward to getting the 182 though, having something to cherish and enjoy will be great being a massive car enthusiast :D ....

As I said cheap relitive to what they are no hot hatch is going to be as cheap as say a economical diesel Clio/Yaris/206 etc. Then again there a different league of car you have to pay for it.

I don't think prices are that bad though for what they are at all.
