Buying a Clio 172

I am currently looking to buy a 172 and am going to look at one tommorow? Anything I should look out for?

Its a W reg(2000) with 43000 miles.

Thanks Mat

The basics like body panels matching up and no worrying gaps between them

Check the paint job for signs of touch up

If the front bumper and bonnet are covered in stone chips then theres a good chance its been raced about driving up other peoples arses

Fully stamped service history? if done at renault it should have had a new set of brakes at the 36,000 mile point

The steering wheel and drivers side door switch unit surround tend to get very shabby very easily, both minor things but annoying all the same

Check the trip computer on the end on the wiper stalk for the mpg reading, prob wony be accurate if its been moved round a forecourt but always worth checking

Is it at a reno garage or independant?

Id say no more than £5000 for the year and mileage

Most important thing to check is to see if its had a new exhaust. They like to drop off at the 40k mile mark. Was warned about this and then at 40,200 miles, mine fell off. At 43k it should have been changed already.

Ok just got back from looking at it. Seems a nice model. A quick questions for anyone got an 2000 172?

1) The seat was a bit worn, is this normal after 46000 miles. The bloke was a big guy though. Also the steering wheel and gear know were a bit scruffy this normal for this age?

Thanks Mat.

Ive got a 2000 172, 43k miles. Seats are fine, so is the gear knob and so is the rest of the interior. Only thing thats worn is the steering wheel. In need of some leather conditioner me thinks

Seats can wear depends on the care taken.

Stearing wheel have been known to wear Ive had mine replaced at 30k or so and so have many other people. Gear stick well they get scratch badly whel people wear rings etc.

If your owrried about milage go to a dealershipa nd ask them if they cna look up the cars history that should tell you when its had warently work done.
