you wanna make sure the belts have been done, if they havnt your friend will be looking at another 600quidish to get that sorted.172s should have had them done by now so defo worth a checking? do you know what spec it is?
My advice (owing to recent experience) would be to check that when the engine is warm, it doesn't sound like a diesel on idle. If it does that'd be a shot dephaser pulley, very expensive job!
See what I mean from YouTube to get an idea of the sound. I'm in this situation myself! £170 for the part, and has to be done with belts / kits
Also - check climate control switches between hot and cold OK (common fault), seat handles work, headlight washers (not so important), and obviously all the standard things you'd check when buying a used car.
Better still, ask if there is someone on here who knows what to look for who can come with you.
Where are you?
If the service intervals have been adhered to, the cam belt is due so you need to haggle that in if they haven't been done.
If they have been done by "his mate" or "the bloke around the corner", walk....no, run away.
