Buying a second hand engine..

  330i. E30 Touring.
I'm going to have a look at a second hand engine this weekend. From a Saxo VTS. I'm aware of the basics, but what can I look out for? Obviously I'll make sure it turns over by hand. Anything else?

is it a runner?

very dangerous unless you can hear it running and/or have reason to trust the seller. been there before lots of times and it's a gamble unless ^above

Make sure its from a saxo VTS? My ''mate'' went to buy an engine for a toyota MR2 and bought a 1600 Corolla lump.

Fcuktard.

Check the engine number with the DVLA too, make sure its not out of a stolen car. (Unless its dirt cheap! lol)

Lol! No, it's not runnng. Out of the car already.. LOL, Dan. What a spanner. It's. 2002 VTS engine with 60k on. £200.

problem is that you're obviously extremely limited in what you can check if it's out of the car. take it you don't know the engine or the seller? could ask them for a limited guarantee, but i've been given those before and still been sold junk

you can only weigh up the pros/cons of going to the effort of fitting it to find it has a problem, vs. finding one you can listen to/test instead

might be fine - just don't know without it being a runner

loads of things you can check if it runs - HG, top/bottom end noises, oil leaks/burning, compression, oil pressure (if the car has a gauge). ideally want to drive it as well, to check power

can't really do anything other than a visual inspection/spanner on crank if it's not running

just a trust/luck thing if it's out of the car

The fella seems to have a reasonable reputation for his engines. Fingers crossed then, tbh.

I do a lot of engine replacements usually try & source out of write off as you know they where running until point of impact but make sure you see the car its coming out of if it old say 1999 & there breaking it check mileage as these motors have normally been thrashed from new by people who could barely afford the car nevermind the cost of servicing bear in mind there will be some that have been looked after just not many.

Turn fly wheel to check its got compression, check sump incase they've dropped it (had that a few times) extra work swapping sump off your old motor.

£200 good price.
