Buying advice.

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
hi just wondering if i could get sum advice on what clio to buy.
Im 22 and two years ago sold my teg type r(uni) and regretted it once i dropped out.I always wanted a williams and was set upon buying one until a week ago. I went to a renault dealer and stumbled upon a 172 cup.i never thought much of the new shape clio, but after seeing the cup,all changed.I decided not to pursue the williams(which suddenly dident look as good) and now im well and truely hooked on the new models.I was close to going back to a type r,but ive decided i need a change. Would you guys like to fill me in on which one to get, 172 or the cup.i like the 182's but the extra money seems pointless.cheers

The Cup is a stripped out 172 n ABS zeons leather seats etc.

Depending what your budge the wheole range is great value from the Williams to the Trophy how much are you looking at spending and what sort of warently etc do you want and what do you want it for?

If it's going to be a everyday runabout then I'd buy a full fat version of the 172 which you can now buy at very good used prices. All depends how important added comforts are to you.

budget is up to 6.5k.ive got a work motor so it would be a wknd/evening vehicle.how do they compare to the honda's?

Hard to answer that question cause I love the Teg Type R and I'd gladly own one of those. Take one for a test drive and see what you think.

The cup is 89Kgs lighter than the normal 'Full Fat' 172/182. Its a bloody good car (for the price) and the VVT kick hits about 4-5K, instead of just over 6K on the Civic. Sometimes I wish I'd gotten a 172/182 proper, but then if I had one of those, I'd probably wonder what if I'd gone out and gotten a Cup...can't win! :)

Try a couple and see what you think...can you live without creature comforts and luxuries? if so, get a cup...if not get a full fat...if you want the best of both worlds for the handling, blow some more cash and get a cupped 182!!! (Choices, Choices).

PS. If you're buying a 172 cup, make sure it has a plastic splitter on the bottom of the front bumper, and the tyre foam stuff in the boot (The 172 cup doesn't have a spare, it has thinner glass and less sound proofing, no ABS, no Traction control, No side airbags, no CD auto-changer, No Alcantara seats, No split rear seats, only 4 seatbelts instead of 5...but the 15stone (ish) lighter weight doesn't make it too much different to the normal 172.

is the 172 traction control permanent,or is it switchable?im not keen on gadgets.more to go wrong in my book.do they come with climate control, some ive seen have some dont?what is the difference between cc and ac?

It's switchable but if your budget is £6.5k (if buying from a dealer rather than private) then you're probably looking at an older model without the traction control. CC and AC is standard on the full fat 172. Climate control works by maintaining the temp that you set on the digital display.

At 5k rpm you'll feel the kick and smile :)

I'm sure whichever you choose you'll have fun in. Go hunting for some on sale locally and take them out for a drive.

The Hondas more expensive and maybe a better car but the Clio fun.
You have to drive them to know which you prefere the Clio the ring its neck throw it about type of car.
I'd say a Cup possibly more suited as its a ahrder ride and less creature cumforts than the 172 full fat and often cheap insurance can be more expeneive as so many have been crashed.

VVT has nothing to do with the 4k kick that due to cam spec and the swopping of the fueling to a fixed mapping rarther than the open loop they use below 4k or 75% throttle.
There is at least 1 Cup with 5 proper seatbelts installed by Renault.
The Cd changer was an option.
