Cam belt cheat

Car  BMW M135i; Clio 172
My car has done barely 10-15k miles since having the cam belt changed, but it's getting on for 5 years now, so presumably the belt needs changing because the rubber perishes after such a long time. But what about the pulleys? Is there deterioration over time or just from mileage?

What I'm getting at is, is it viable to "do a cheat" by fitting just a new belt, splitting the old one lengthways and slipping a new one on?

The car runs so sweet at the moment (was done at Diamond Motors last time), so I'm apprehensive that the car won't be the same when done again, and because there is no reknowned specialists local to me.

I'm prepared for a flaming :grimacing:🙈😂.

It's normally the idlers which fail before the belt in my experience. I personally never just change the belt. Whilst you are there you may as well do it right.

My idler had a crack in it. Belt itself was fine. Idler failing would still f**k up the engine.

Less chance of engine going pop if you just don't do it at all than do what you are thinking about !

You can tell the demographic is getting more mature on CS, a few years back this would be a full on flame fest.

Did you see that Fuzz Townsend do this cam belt "trick" on car sos?

I've been spared . TBF, I kinda acknowledged it might not be a great idea in the first place :innocent:.

I did, and a friend (I've disowned him now 😂) mentioned it to me too, which is why I was inquisitive.

.

Exactly what happened to mine - cambelt had been changed in the history, but someone skimped on the rest of the bits while they were there, and an idler disintegrated = 16 bent valves.

I'd have been gutted if mine let go on the way down to get my belts done ahaha
