Cambelt Change

Hi Everyone

I have a clio 172, 51 plate on 55k miles. Its due for a service around now. One question i have is when are the cambelts due to be changed?.

I cant find anything in the service history for the cambelt being done. Someone mentioned 72k i recall.

Also does anybody know what the difference is between Renaults Silver, Gold & Platinum services other than the price:S

Pretty much...I'd get it done asap to be on the safe side. LOTS of trouble if it does snap.

72k or 5 years...whichever comes first.
Now I was told 72k or 6 years, do these stealers really know what they are on about!! I had it done anyway, and i agree, better safe than a hefty repair bill if it goes ping!

It's 5 years/72k.

Rule number 1 about Fight Club is don't listen to Renault. Tell them to check their own service manuals and there is it in plain english.

Couldn't agree more hoff! Well now that im Renaultless, i wont have to anymore!!!
 
IMO chnage it at 60k and 4 years max. Thats unless you've the money for a new engine as over 60k and 4 years the risk of failure are higher.

yea 72k or 5 years is far too long.

Its mainly down to the type of driving you do, if its stop - start town centre stuff do it more often.

Haynes say 36k i think, 50k is a happy middle ground.

Taking mine to Rentech tommorow for her cambelt change, and 72K service. Really looking forward to giving her some beans on Sat, as she's now on just over 71K :eek:

Ok, just booked my car in to get a service, £99 for the service seemed fine. However they want £650 to do the cambelt:eek: .
That seems a little steep to me.

Anyone know a good place in the Bristol area that could do that for less. Not that i am stingy but my subaru only cost £500 for a major service including the cambelt. Cant see how it can be that much to change it on a clio.

Would somewhere like Interpro do it?

if i can get my subarus two cambelts plus a major service done for £500 i am sure i can get it cheaper than £650 on a clio.

The Suburu was designed for a 2.0 engine at front and is easy to change.

5.1 hours work and £140 for the cambelt and aux belt kitin parts alone.

Don't forget unless a garage has the tools and done the job before they are likly to mess it up it happens a lot.

wonderful, i would drive to belgium for that if i could get a cheap ferry. it has to be done i guess this month. its on 55.5k at the minute and its over 5 years old now.

just hope all is ok in the meantime, i have to drive to cardiff this afternoon.

Have you ever owned a subaru?. Trying to change the plugs involves removing half the engine bay, let along changing the cambelt.

I can see why it is expensive on a clio now though. Got a nice quote from KTech for Considerably less so seruiously thinking of heading down there to Dorset if its correct.

KTec are alright, though a mate of mine had a dodgy experience there, other than that I use RenTech, or there's a garage in Exmouth that is highly recommended on here.

Have fun trying you can get it done just remember what I've said I don't make any money out of this so why should I lie.

The Clio has arguablety two cambelts one the aux belt. Plus there more space in a scoobie to work.

Im a renault mechanic and ive done a few cambelts on cups and they are a piece of piss if you have the locking tools, did my own car in 2 1/2 hours, standard 172's take a bit longer due to air con geting in the way and the aux belt is a nightmare but it shouldnt take 5 hours

5.1 hours is the listed time for a full fat ie what prices are based on if as you do know what your doing can be done quicker etc but most garages don't quote of the time they can do it they charge off the book time.

well either way got to be done, its one thing i shouldnt really complain about paying for i guess.

It had mine done at Autocare in Bedminster. Cost me 322 quid for the cambelt kit. This excluded the Aux belt though which is recommended to do at the same time. Service was good. That was a few months ago and no complaints which is unusual for me! Alternatively have a chat with 'Lemonobby' on here. He's done a lot of work on my motor and a nice chap too. He works for Renault

Make sure you get the Aux/belt done to, i didn't i found out the hard way. My cars currently at the garage with the engine smashed to bits:mad:

i tried ap autocare and got a quote for £610 which was only a little bit cheaper than Renault. Still if they have done it at that price for you that seems odd.

lemmonobby is hopefully going to be able to fit me in too.

Plugs are okay to do on Subarus...cambelt is cheap as chips to get done.

Try Rentech for cambelt down in Portsmouth

I'm 17 and changed my own cambelt with the haynes manual. Got the belt at trade price for a fiver and the aux belts were £2. Took me 4.5 hours with two mates, geuss the megane engine must be real tight in eh.
