Cambelt gone after only 3 years & 30k

I've had a nightmare!

I'm pretty sure that my cambelt has gone as I broke down on Friday, I had it done about 3 years ago and have only done around 30k since.

I'm not really sure what to do now, my car is a ph1 probably worth around £2.5K

Has anyone else ever fixed an engine after the belt has gone? I'd be interested in what it cost?

I'm not sure if the Garage who did it will take any responsibility to be honest.

Do you think people would consider it as a right off?

you can pick up a 172 engine with around the 40-50k mark for under £400 these days. Thats the best option imo as the valves are probabuly shaped like a boomerang by now.

All depends how much damage has been done. Might be very minimal.

not sure theres any recourse to the original belt changer, but if you have been unfortunate enough to do damage to the head etc, it could be a bad one. However 2nd hand head/ engine or whatever may make the burden easier.

Cheers for the advise..So an Engine chage seem the easiest route by the sounds of it.

If it was an ill fitted part (aka garages fault) it wouldn't have lasted 3 years.

more than likely just a inferior part , as mentioned if it was fitted wrong it wold of gone by now . i no it isnt ideal but if your mechanically abled whip the head of and have a look at whats been damaged then go from there .

It must be somethings fault! Dodgy part maybe? I would speak to Renault as the part should have lasted longer than 3 years or it would say please change this cambelt after 2 years!

i have done one of these back in the day , with parts and labour being expensive nowadays approx £1200-£1500 all inc as suggested you prob be better off with a second hand engine and fit a new belt and kit on that.

everybody likes cheap at some point in there lives and that time is now here

It's a belt. It can snap at any time. It's just a matter of odds. It's very very unlikely that the belt would fail after 3 years, but it's certainly not impossible. As has been said, it could have just as easily have been the aux belt that went and took the cam belt with it. Any garage/mechanic would rightly laugh in your face if you expected them to take any responsibility after three years.

Gutted, though.

The cars worth about a grand more than that.

You would have to be mental to spend that money without looking to add another £500 and buying another complete car for it:S
