Cambelt tensioner

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
I've been trying to do the timing on my F4R, but I get the feeling the belt is too loose :dapprove: - every time I remove the cam locking tools, the cams rotate against each other and the timing goes! :( - I rotate the cambelt over a few times to distribute the tension as well

got me wondering if perhaps my tensioner is broke.. or if i'm doing it wrong

I'm aligning marks A and B:

should it be A & C?

I tried it on A&C and the belt is a lot tighter and the idle has smoothed out a lot! but obviously don't want to run it like this if its too tight

align the small arrow with the small cut out behind the main adjuster, have you got the back of the tensioner aligned with the cut out on the head.
By the way turn adjuster clockwise to adjust, all should align up ok.

i have the notch in the cutout, yeh

but the 'middle' plate seems to be stuck on the lower plate, meaning I can't align B&C

I can align A (using the hex hole) to B (the raised triangle) -or- to C which is the little cut out on the 'middle' plate

A-B aligned:

A-C aligned:

initialy the arrrow doesnt move but when the belt gets some tension on it, it mooves all of a sudden

do you move it by rotating the hex hole clockwise a few times?

how can a tensioner be causing this much pain!!

I have the manual - but I'm just getting confused cause those 2 marks arent lining up!

cambelt must need to be tensioned some more i guess

is the nut loose when u are trying to tension it?

do you have the little leg located properly on the back?

if so then must have a dicky tensioner

nut is loose, yeh and the leg is in the slot

i'll swap the tensioner over for a spare i've got

how much play is meant to be in the cambelt eventually? I've got a couple mm play between the 2 cam pulleys

shouldnt have any as the pulleys will turn.

wish you were closer, id come over and have a look some time

maybe i'm just 95% of the way to tensioning it properly... hence the notches have not aligned

means i've been running the cambelt super-lose all these miles

maybe you re just not trying hard enough.

you will feel some resistance as you move the tensioner, then all of a suddent it will move and you will see the notches move.

if that makes sense, not easy to explain

i know what you're talking about... but as i've been tensioning it wrong and was just trying the new method, i didn't want to over do anything

luckily i've left the car in bits so i can hopefully just tighten it up some more! :D
