camber correction bolts needed ? tires waring down, various probable causes

  MK3 GTI golf 16v
basicly, fitted coilovers and then about a month later when i took the front wheels off for something else i found both front tires where completely worn down to the chords on the inside 2inches or so of the tire.

had new tires fitted and went to ho have the tracking done and he noticed the bottom ball joints where buggered, so i fitted new bottom ball joints then had the tracking done after that.

now, im presuming the ball joints where the main culprit for the tires wearing out so horribly. but should i have camber correction bolts fitted ? will simply lowering the car cause the inside of the tires to be completely ruined or was it likely to have been caused by the ball joint/tracking ?
if i was to get camber correction bolts, am i right in thinking they ideally need setting up by a specialist?

ill add that the tires had only been on a few months and had a good 5mm tread or so all over before fitting coilovers.

any help or ideas appreciated

If you lower the suspension then that will give you neg. camber. The more you lower the more negative camber, and that will wear the tyres on the inside, also if the toe in/out is excessive the tyres will also wear excessively. Now youve changed the ball joints that should help. You still need a full alignment check and adjustment. If the test readings are showing more than 1.5deg. of neg camber then you will need some adjustable camber bolts.

You can't do it yourself unless you have laser eyes :D Checking and adjusting the tracking will be a half hours work and will cost about £45. Fitting cam bolts and adjusting them is another half hour. Depends how low your coilovers are really, Do they have adjustable camber bolts already? It all costs a bit when you want to go low.
