Cams, Dephaser or problem?

  Ph1
Got the car back. No evidence to exactly what caused it, the only real sign of wear was in 2 areas on the cam where it sits in the journals.

My guess is a hydraulics lifter or two had failed and caused a bit of oil starve on the cam and the tapping noise was just tappet / lifter wear. Renault reckon it could have been some rocker cover sealant that had bunged up a oil channel.

Replaced the Pipers with Cat cam 428's. Torque with the Pipers and pull from low down was very impressive. Have my doubts these 428's will be as good overall :( - needs mapped tho then we can compare results.

A number of different reason Russ. The time the car would be off the road for the regrinds to be profiled, i hadnt got a decent set of spares to give to Piper so would have to try and buy some, Pipers were pretty much probably maybe the cause of the tapping in the first place? and no one really rates regrinds / far better performance to be had from a ground billet. I had these first done when there was only Schreks (sp) available some 5 years back.

Hope to get it mapped in the next few weeks when i can get time off but initial running up to 4k rpm and the car is as flat as a f**t

hi andy i have watched your video.
last year i have the same problem and no body could find it in turkey
your problem is dephaser pulley
but you can hear the sound whole of the engine especially on rock cover
and if it is make more this when the car gets warm and on idle be sure of that.
if your lifters gone it works like a sewing machine not like that
and if rockers gone the car dont work
but yours like a diesel engine because of dephaser pulley

Ah thats fair enough matey, i seriously wounldn't worry yet, with different cams the map will be all over the shop so it will be flat, just hold reserve till the map is done im sure it will be alot better :)

The scary thing is mine is still on its std map, and its scary how bad the std map is!

Not sure if it was the dephaser pulley, although i did replace it due to just in case and the high miles the cars done, because we traced the sound to the middle of the engine plus i whipped the cam cover off and directly listend to the dephaser which again wasnt noisy.

Russ
Im holding on to the hope its running so lean a animal of a car is going to explode once its mapped haha :dead:
Got the previous rolling road results with the Pipers from a few months back and havent changed specs since so will be interesting to see how they compare.

Ha lol, yeah if you think about it, because the cams are now different, the map you have now will have been made exactly for the way your engine developed power, and now with different cams in, it will be adding fuel/air at the wrong moment, the smalest change can make such a difference matey, iv seen cars look 20 bhp easy from things like this, id eat my hat if after the new map you didn't gain a lump of power.

Also id say your lb ft level should still be pretty good too, alot of your torque IMO will be from your headwork
