cams/map problem tuners advice needed!

  LY 182
Right,, basically i fitted some cams to a mates 172 a few months ago.. they were a cat cams missmatched set he bought from somebody off here (somebody may remember them?) i cant for the life of me remember which where which but anyway..

i fitted them (and before anyone says it cam timing as perfect checked and double checked all tools used etc etc) gave it a little test drive and it had the usual lumpy cam idle told him to take it away and get it mapped.. which he did at amd in essex.. i have a rr print out it aparently made 190bhp at the fly :S
he complained that after a sharp acceleration, and especially steering it was stalling..

i now own the car so obviously want it sorted.. my question is (and hoping a tuner can confirm this) is it likely that amd have just used a generic map..

i think the main problem is the idle is set too low.. idles about 900rpm.. although it feels powerfull and torquey it pinks at high revs.. im sure its all wrong..

im just wondering if one of the tuners reckons they can sort it with a proper map.. if not im going to spend the money bolting standard cams back in!

sorry for the essay!

Remember the thread. I might be wrong but they should work fine togther so its morelikely a case vif needing a good map.

believe they were 428 inlet 421 exhaust which should be a nice match. the std ECU may struggle with the 421 exhaust cam giving a lot of overlap, though IMO it's worth trying to map it before giving up on it. it would be a great sutup with a proper ECU fitted

im sure its got potential.. its just doing my head in being impossible to manouver the thing without it stalling! ok next bit of advice how would i be best spending my money, bearing in mind i want to keep the creature comforts on this car??

omex going to cost a bomb? i could fit/wire it myself im guessing sorting a cable throttle/idle control etc etc going to end up costing a bit

Matt at TDF. His new ECU may help you out.

Or the Ktec Gen 90 one. Maybe a possiblity Instead of a Omex.

I know Matt is the place to go but i dont want to sound like i work for him do i. :)

Lol... I get ya!!

I would bet my house on his abilities TBH, not just cos he is a pla, but because of that I have seen what he can do and knows... the guy is a walking encylopedia ;)

chip wizards tbh.. he designed the dta ecu many moons ago. doesnt advertise, doesnt need to.

15 overall class champioinships last year...the boy knows his stuff.

I'm actualy blushing slightly here ;) Cheers for the positive comments chaps.

We can definately have a look at this, there are a couple of possible solutions but the most cost effective and definately the one to try first is revisiting the calibration of the stock ECU. As you may know we supply RS Tuning products for most of the Renault Sport range and can work with Paul at RS on this to produce a calibration for the combination of cams your mate is running. The car should definately not be detting at high RPM and I'd want to get this on our rollers to establish exactly whats going on where before we went any further with it.

If you did want to go move away from the stock ECU then we supply Pectel engine control and of course our own RS-Force EC range of engine controllers. Between RST and ourselves I'd have thought we could have got this going well on the stock Sirius though.

Cheers
Matt

understand what??

i know how much hassle youv had with it .... i was at the hollingworth meet, when you needed it re-mapping...........again. sounded well. but wasnt particularly all that quick iirc.

so you were... now its sorted!! Hence the previous comment!

Was still quick enough to see off that evo ;)

Are they a bit hit and miss tho ? basically you'll get a good job depending if he's in the mood kind of thing?

Sure i read that a good few years back on these very pages..

not really. he starts from scratch.......completely wiping any map on the car. i suppose it depends on the state of tune. if its good then the results will be better. like chris' cup, and mine. engine built right to start with so best results gained.

im sure he does have his 'off' days......but they are few and far between. i dare say he could improve pretty much any car on here with a gd session on his rollers.

call a few places and have a chat to see what they can do for you. I'm confident I know how those cams will behave however ;) std ecu isn't a likely candidate

Like i said,

Try a ECU rempa first from some one that does live mapping. TDF, RStuning or try this Chipwizard place that only 2live has experience of.

Failing that

TDF - Matt - Has a ECU that you may be interested in.
KTRsport - Andy Have a ECU you may be interested in.

I mentioned both Companies products in my first post to try to stay away from this Tuner war. Ring around find out who you want to deal with or find people on here running the ECUs and ask for feedback.

What ive seen of Chipwizards was a joke.

My mate had his mk1 hybrid mapped by Wayne @ CW a little while back. Got the car back it was cr@p. idled at 1500rpm, the ECU was left out of the case under the scuttle panel to the elements, it got wet. The scuttle washers jets were not recconected, again squirting it over the ECU... It made "190bhp" there aparently, it did go quite well, but we both agreed the rest of it was a joke when shedding out over 300 notes. Aparently he was quite grumpy as well, not very enthusiastic, but i wasnt there to see him :p

doesnt sound like wayne at all tbh. hes a very enthusiastic guy. anyone whos actually met him will tell u that. hes always more than willing to talk etc. i turned up at his unit with matt wills last week we ended up staying there chatting for over 2 hours. checking out his race cappacino (sp) that has now been banned from the series for being too fast.

he is usually very professional in his work.. altho i have heard if u turn up and be a knob wth him, giving it the big i am, he will be less interested in your car. and who can blame him tbh. he does it for the love not the money.

needless to say. he turned matt away in his 200, saying it would be pointless mapping his car until there were some actual improvements in other areas, i.e. de-cat, filter, exhaust etc etc . then he would map it as it would be worth doing. a lot of places wont do this as its turning away money.....and for that you would have to question their professionalism.

and for that id have to agree with him. hes not just after making a quick few quid,, but wants customer satisfaction. which he usually gets.
