Cams wont line up clio 182

  Renault Clio 182
Hi, question for f4r specialists.
Ive lined the cams up with the genuine renault tool, but the inlet pulley is 180 degrees out ( The mark is at the bottom instead of the top ) Yet the pulley has never been off of the cam.

Tried it with the pulley mark at the top where it should be but the cams wont line up. the renault tool wont fit.
( EDIT ) Should the offset in the cams be at the top or the bottom. The only time i could get the tool in was when it was offset at the bottom.

Any help, suggestions or anything. as im starting to lose faith with this engine.
Thank you

as above the offset should be at the bottom if you are timing for tdc, you have to loosen at least one of the pulleys to time up properly, just do not use the cam locking tool to hold the cams in place when loosening or tightening the pulley bolts, you have to use the pulley locking tool otherwise you will bend the horse shoe or snap a piece off your cam end... sometimes the crank pulley is floating as well so best to have a flywheel locking tool... or a mate with a big screwdriver

  dan's cast offs.
Crank needs locking regardless and 172/182 it's always floating. You need both pulleys cracked off as well.

Offset can be either way as well.

Not true... 172 block I got off @Kelv off here when he was selling bits had a locked crank. I have no idea how it was timed up previously!!! I swapped it for the floating pulley off my old block so I could time it properly and allow belt to turn without moving the internals....

Either that OR the bottom pulley was just seized to the crank... another very common issue. Thankfully, the crank doesn't need to be floating to time these which is why Renault did away with it on the later F4R in the 197/200 (as well as the Turbos but that was for other reasons on the Turbos).

If the camshaft setting points were 180 degrees out, why not just rotate the crank thru another 180 degrees to achieve TDC on 1/4 and get the cams in the correct position?

Hi guys, as you can probably tell im not a mechanic so im hoping on some genuinly helpful answers here. Ill attatch a photo of the timing so far, The cams do line up however they are offset to the top ( im aware the manual says bottom ) but this was the only way i could get the timing marks to line up on both pulleys, The bottom pulley as you can see marked with a black mark is in the correct position as shown on the manual ( betwen the / / Mark .. hope im explaining myself haha.) The belt is tight with no slack where its not needed, and tensioned up as it should be. If any of this is wrong id like to know before i even start the car. Due to the fact that its being done in a family garage, but as much as its family its not renault specialist. unfortunatly where i am in Spain there are no renault sport specialists nearby, so its this or renault direct which will be the next stop if this isnt actually correct, The renault garage is about 20 mins from here so i could get the car towed there and done by them if needed, Just the 60€ ph that frightens me a bit as this is spain and things take their time. Hooopefully this has been done right, or can be easly changed if it isnt. Youve all been amazing so far with helping me. Thank you

Well after another day, The car is back on the road. No problems as such :) re did the timing as i wasnt 100% sure with this and car now runs fine, no hickups on the way home. Keeping the revs quite low for now going to run it in slowly and hopefully it will remain trouble free.

Again id like to thank everyone whos helped with advice
