Can 10w40 oil be used after using 5w40 ?

This is a bit random i know.

Last week i changed the oil and filter in my 2002 172FF, as the last time it was done was 5000 miles ago in its last service using 10w40 Part synthetic oil.

When i changed the oil, i refilled it with 5w40 fully synthetic oil :)

My mate was saying to me from now on i'll have used fully synthetic oil all the time and i can't go back to 10w40 Part Synthetic (why i would want to :S - i don't know)

I asked why ?

And he replied something along the lines on if i used 10w40 in my next oil change say, it will react with the 5w40 oil that was in the engine prior to draining the oil as there is still some left in engine clinging to things :S

He said my oil would turn to sludge or something :(

With the 2 oil types mixing and i'd have to use engine flush to flush out all the 5w40 before refilling with 10w40.

He even said if it was required to top up the oil and i used 0w40 or 10w40, it would fook my engine as its a part synthetic and fully synthetic oil mixed together

This all sounds a load or garbage to me, or is he correct ?

Where did you buy the 5w40? I'm looking for some for my V6. I'm in Edinburgh and need to try and get some before Thursday.

Thanks mate.

As long as it meets relevant standards don't fall for the brand rubbish. Also there's nothing wrong with using a 10w/40 semi-synth as long as you don't try and make it last 12-18k between service intervals.
